    Hi and thanks for reading!
    Audi A3 2010 2.0TDI Manual 5dr

My brother's car....it was working fine.

One day, he replaced the puddle lights with projector style puddle lights (led), went to lock the car, it wouldn't lock any of the doors. Even if the key was put into the driver's door lock, none of the doors locked (apart from the driver's door). Boot remained locked.

Began pulling fuses instead of calling me up for advice (for some odd reason!). He swears all of the fuses were put back into place as they were found. Fuses were in tact and not blown.

Now, the central locking will not activate when the remote button is pressed (it will unlock, can hear the motors activate, boot remains locked). If the unlock button is pressed and held, the windows go down but won't go back up unless the key is turned and held in lock position in the driver's door.

The accessory and ignition positions do nothing on the dash, the car won't crank... I don't know what the hell he's done!

We've checked the battery voltage to ensure it's not a flat battery
Changed the battery in one of the key fob remotes to make sure it's not that
Removed the puddle lights and tried without

I'm an ex mechanic, good with electrics but since recently becoming disabled my brain isn't what it used to be so I need a little bit of help with where to start on this one. Appreciate any help you can give!

    Thanks so much!

You need a diagnostic system such as VCDS to see what is stored in the convenience system memory. You will probably have to change the coding for the door lights to accept LED bulbs or to turn off the hot bulb monitoring, it varies.

I managed to borrow a VCDS v23.3 with a hex cable. It isn't communicating with the car. When I do an interface test it says:
    K1 ok
    K2 ok
CAN not ready (I'm unsure if this is a Canbus car?)
I hit Apply anyway and save it.

Then when I try to run an auto scan, it says Function Not Supported By The Gateway. If I try to select a module to scan, it says No Response From Controller!

I've tested it on another Audi and it's working fine so it's definitely not the VCDS setup.

I suspect power to the CAN gateways might be out. Can anyone help me confirm this? I've got lots of pics of the fusebox, VCDS error message etc but can't post them on here yet because I'm too new!

Yes it is a full CAN BUS car so the problem goes deeper and it is unusual.

Thanks for confirming. Any suggestions where to start with this one? I have tried probing around in the fuse box under the bonnet but unsure which of the fuses relate to controllers.

If it was me I'd try and get my hands on a decent wiring diagram and start by looking at the battery and then trace the power lines to the fuses and then to the various control modules, even though your brother said he put everything back where it was it does sound like he's got something wrong (or blown a module somewhere)

When someone has been fiddling, start with the basics, dont make any assumptions and good luck!
