Just replacing all belts, water pump, tensioners, rollers etc.. on my 2002 A6 2.5TDI.

I've just replaced the toothed belt for the cam shafts but I'm a bit concerned about the tensioner.

I loosened the tensioner and removed the locking pin. Then set my torque wrench to 15nm and slowly turned the tensioner bracket but it never reached torque, it went as far as it could possibly go.

Is this correct? I don't want a belt that's too tight.

    Any help appreciated.

    Thanks

So it just rolled over to the start, you did go anti clock?

    Thanks for responding Crasher

I turned it ant-clockwise like the image shows (I must have the same manual) and I expected my torque wrench to click at 15Nm before the pin fully opened, which it appears to have done.
I received this link earlier and I'm going to perhaps try closing the pin very slowly and carefully Attention Required! | Cloudflare

I would get your torque wrench calibrated.

Exactly my thoughts, however I've just discovered the wrench (Draper) is a clockwise only model! I assumed that the lever that lets you select direction meant that it could be also used anti-clockwise. Will need checking and possibly recalibrating now.

    UPDATE:
I checked the position of the damper piston after leaving it overnight and it had moved back down, so not fully open which is encouraging but I've attempted to reset it again to be sure.
To double-check, I slowly turned the Allen key clockwise and re-inserted the locking pin. Then removed the pin and turned the Allen key anti-clockwise gently to open up the piston. After about five minutes the piston moved back down. This may be normal but I've never done this before.
I'm getting different information from Gates and INA/Schaeffler regarding the position of the tensioning lever, although I note that the lever has Gates stamped on it (I bought as part of INA kit). The current position is nearer to the Gates instructions. Is it that these parts fit many Audi/VAG models and there will be variations? I've attached pics with 'open' and 'resting' position.

    Any advice appreciated. Thanks

Just reset the timing as the right side cam shaft had moved by about 3mm. Took off the belt and left side cam sprocket and re-did the whole exercise.
I'm happy with the tensioner now, I think one bit of info from Schaeffler is incorrect and that's what threw me. There's a picture (attached) showing an angle of 90 degrees which conflicts with all the other images I've seen and you can't actually set that because the roller is on a pivot.
