The MK1 roadster the other day started intermittently beeping and displaying a red oil can in the LCD screen...~I have no manual but assumed it to be oil level warning. It occurred after a 35 mile run no issue then being parked for a few hours. It stopped doing it after a couple of miles on the return.
The oil is actually a bit overfilled so I wonder does the sensor pick up over fill? or could it be faulty in which case where is it located.

Red means stop and with the 1.8T engine this is almost certainly a blocked oil pump pickup screen, they are VERY prone to sludge buildup, so sump off and a thorough clean before refitting. Please, don’t run the engine anymore as the first part to die is the turbo and that gets expensive.

so I am about to look into the oil light issue, is a clean of pick up pipe/screen usually ok or should I buy a new one?
Does this sump have a gasket or sealer only? it is ally so maybe no gasket.
I assume other than electrical issue the only other possible culprits are oil pump (engine only done 98K) or faulty low pressure sender?

Some people fit a new pickup, we stick it in the hot caustic ultrasonic tank. The seal is silicone goo.

all done, sender, pick up, cleaned sump, new oil and filter. I suspect it was the sender at fault because the pick up was really clean on the screen with no evidence of debris. The sump too was not bad on this 98K engine. I have not seen the light come on again in use, fingers crossed.
