Hi Everyone, good news and bad news. The overheating issue is definitely water pump failure, but unfortunately the impeller has completely disintegrated and only one tiny piece about 1cm square has come out with the coolant. Where do we go from here I wonder? Any advice would be very welcome.

All hoses off, pressure wash and compressed air backflush, possible new radiator.

Hello again Crasher, still with us after all these years! Thanks for the reply. I've flushed as much as I can and just one chunk of plastic has come out. Radiator flows freely, it was stone cold before with no water pump working, it is now hot all over as far as I can tell. I think we'll just have to run the car and monitor it now. There are many threads out there from people who have had VW group water pump impellers disintegrate, but no-one seems to have actually done anything other than fit a new pump. Incidentally, I've used a Gates belt and pump kit,

Yes, like an irritating rash that won’t clear no matter how much emollient cream you rub into it.
