Hi guys, just bought a 62 plate Golf GTD, 59K miles. Nice tidy car but is a none runner, coolant tank empty. Not had chance to look over it yet but thought I’d ask if there are any common issues with these? Am I looking at a head gasket issue?

Have budgeted to put a replacement engine into it if needed but thought I’d ask your opinions first, just bought it as a project to play with really.

    Cheers!

Porous heads are a problem, we fit a new AMC casting as VAG Diesel heads cannot be refaced anyway and I would prefer that to a used engine of unknown condition

What would be the signs of a porous head? I've not had much chance to look at the car yet all I know is the coolant tank is empty and the oil level is very high which I'm guessing is where the coolant has gone. Have read some things about the oil cooler seals also being an issue on these?

Very difficult to pinpoint, more of an educated guess that it is porosity or head gasket but either way the fix is the same.

Been looking at it today, engine wont turn by hand but before I pull it apart I just wanted to check I'm not doing something stupid. First time working with a DSG gearbox so should the engine turn by hand normally if its selected in neutral? Otherwise think I may have a siezed engine.

It should turn over with a 19mm 12 point socket and wrench on the front pulley.

Pretty sure its seized, currently trying to get the sump off to have a look inside but struggling to get the 2 10mm bolts out next to the flywheel as theyre offset.

Managed to get the sump off, water dripping out of the oil pick up and rust underneath the pistons and rod bearings etc, engine won't even turn with a breaker bar so pretty sure its knackered! Where do I find the engine code? Gonna have to pull it out and start searching for a decent replacement engine.

    VIN is WVWZZZ1KZDW061802

Engine is out now, pretty sure the turbo is water damaged too unfortunately! Shame its taken so much damage as it seems to have been well looked after before, full service history and timing belt only done 10k miles ago.

Nevermind better start looking for a replacement engine. I think its a CFGB engine code by the looks of it.
