It seems that both 027 and 096 batteries fit in OK and some sites recommend one and some the other, but what size is the original battery?

Websites are confusing. Majority (Halfords, Yuasa) are pointing me to the smaller 027 battery size using my reg and/or P1310013.jpgVIN. But the Moll fitted (OEM I'm sure) is the bigger 096 (278 mm) size. The Moll one is a 69Ah and states 680A.

Why are the websites telling us to go smaller?? Car is a 1.4 tsi stop start.

Because websites that use the reg are not as accurate as PartsLink24 which uses the VIN and the codes build codes, the genuine VW part number for your car is 000 915 089 F (was 000 915 105 DG) which is a conventional lead acid 096 such as a Bosch S3 008, Varta E13 or Yuasa YBX3096
