More of a heads up than a request for help. My daughters Polo had an EML with P0171 and P0441 codes. These indicated the engine running lean and with a purge valve leak.
Checking the purge valve showed that the valve wouldn't hold vacuum and was in effect, stuck open.

The point to note is, that the valve that had failed was fitted less than one year ago, so I went about investigating why and on inspection of the valve, I found it full of tiny charcoal particles that had obviously caused the vale to stick open.
I cut the valve open to see what was inside and unfortunately there doesn't appear to be anything that can be serviced, so if it happens, a new valve will be required.

I haven't checked out the charcoal filter canister, but for whatever reason, it is letting small particles into the EVAP line and blocking the purge valve. These valves have no inlet filters and are susceptible to contamination, so I have carried out a crude fix of installing an inline fuel filter to catch the charcoal and protect the valve. It doesn't look pretty, but it will save the cost of a new Bosch purge valve on a regular basis.

The car also runs much better now.

For reference, the part number is 0280142345

I have seen this when a charcoal canister has been reused after being damaged in an accident so check the canister for signs of trauma.

Just to follow up on this, the car EML came on again and the code was...
    16555 - Fuel Trim; Bank 1
P0171-006- System too lean - Intermittent.

I removed the previously installed inline filter, emptied out half a pound of charcoal dust, refitted the filter and hey presto! Fault cleared.

The charcoal canister is clearly goosed, but I've saved the cost of a new purge valve, many times over.
