The alternator light illuminated on my 2.5 tdi allroad again recently. This is the 3rd one on the car which has done 200000 miles. This last one was a decent branded overhauled unit as I didnt want the hassle of changing it again. My question is why would they keep failing? I have never known a car that gets through alternators so quickly. Has anyone else had similar issues?

    Cheers Mike

Original 2.5 TDI 140 A alternator was swapped out clsoe to 400 000 km while it was still working.
Original 2,4 120 A alternators have failed around 300 000 km. (The other was fully jammed and therefore car could not be started. The other had worn out carbon brushes.)
My 2.5 TDI allroad has 400 000 + km and alternator failed week ago. Previous owner has swapped it earlier, but I don't know when.

What is wrong with your alternators?

PS 1 mile is 1,609 km

I can't remember even ever changing one, modern VAG alternators are very reliable, even ones made by Valeo, the "New price of darkness"
