    Hello all

My wife’s 2013 B7 Passat Saloon 2.0TDi Bluemotion wouldn’t start very well yesterday and engine management warning light in yellow appeared and stayed on. RAC came out this afternoon and carried out a diagnostic and found that it needs a new battery and a showed a fault on the glow plug number 2. Battery is the original Varta at 10 years old!

    RAC report notes:
vehicle non start, found battery voltage 12.09v, charge and restest result. vehicle started without the use of jump pack. ran charge test and then returned bad cell result. also carried out dtc scan and found DTC: P067200,Glow plug cylinder 2
DTC: U140A00,Terminal 30; interruption, suspect eml on due to glow plug fault. member going to take to main dealer to have battery replaced and glow plug rectified.
alternator, starter and drain tests okay

    Name: CFFB - TDI-CR
    DTC: P067200,Glow plug cylinder 2
    DTC: U140A00,Terminal 30; interruption

I’ve checked on EuroCarParts, Carparts4less and Halfords and found a Varta battery for £246.80, Exide for £234.99 and a Bosch for £209.99. Fitting at Halfords etc is about £27

Got a good relationship with local VW dealership so will ask them about both items as well!

Had anyone got any advice for us before I try and get things sorted for her please?

    Thank you

    Update:

Haven’t had to replace a battery on our B7 or B8 before, so yes I don’t know about prices!

Obviously VW are much more and they have quoted £394 for a genuine replacement! £270 for an eco variant for older cars.

To replace one number two glow plug is £93. And they obviously recommend replacing all of them at the time for £279.

Wife doesn’t want me to do any work on the car really. Maybe the battery change if it’s that easy. If it was anything design or Apple Mac I’m your man

I have much the same car (see footer) and had a GP fail a year or so back. While under the bonnet I changed all 4 so can only recommend you do the same.

As for the battery, mine is original (also Varta) but if the Varta has been good then stick with that make.

Varta for me although nothing wrong with Exide or Bosch, they are all as crap as each other because they are all made in the same JCB plant using recycled lead with is crap, mind you they are not as bad as Yuasa, not many are THAT bad. The only problem with Bosch is there is no coding value so I just use JCB. You can tell a real Varta from the code on the top, Varta by JCB says JCB and real Varta is VAO.

Halfords quoted me £206.99 for their own AGM096 battery with a five year warranty and £217.99 to replace all four glow plugs.

Tanya offer an A7 VARTA SILVER DYNAMIC 096 AGM START STOP CAR BATTERY 12V 70AH (570901076) at £133.29, but it’s out of stock.

Recommended alternative is an S5 A08 BOSCH AGM CAR BATTERY 12V 70AH TYPE 096 S5A08 for £131.51 and £7.99 delivery.

    EXIDE 096 AGM CAR BATTERY 70AH AGM700 EK700 is £98.45 plus £7.99 delivery.
