    Hey folks,

have a 2007 1.9TDI avant PD engine I believe. Having an issue that I may have been having a while but only recently noticed.

My car whether idle or on a long run doesn’t seem to be hitting 90 degrees on the temp gauge. Just come back from a decent run (150 miles there and back) and the temp didn’t get above about 60 and the fuel economy was really poor, best I got was 38MPG driving steadily in 5th. Only had the car about 2 months and fuel economy was much better previously.

Is this the thermostat that needs replacing? I’m not savvy with cars so will take it to a garage but hoping for a bit of advice so I don’t get ripped off.

The car isn’t running any different, pulls fine in each gear and there are no other issues I’ve noticed.

I had similar on my 2002 1.9 tdi, fuel economy dropped to around 450 miles on a tank of fuel, I really noticed it at night, I'd accelerate and there would be a lot of smoke in the headlights of cars behind, much less noticable in the day time. I had my garage replace both the temperature sensor and also the thermostat, instantly the car went back to doing 650-700 miles on a tank of diesel with the A/C running all year round. Should have got the work done sooner, as it would have paid for itself in the improved MPG.

My best understanding of the fuel economy, was because the car thought it was not up to temperature, because the gauge showed 60 degrees, it increased the fuel, which did not get used as it was really up to normal running temperature, so the excess fuel went out the exhaust as smoke. But someone else might know better.

Yes, classic thermostat. If the gauge reads below 90 it is really only about 77.

Thanks chaps. Is it worth getting the sensor done at the same time?
