I used to know this, I think

B2 is the chassis (80) and 89 is the body (coupe)?

But the B9 (A4) is the 8W saloon, so is there a different one for avant?

    Thanks

B whatever is a figment of someone's imagination, only the type number is relevant so for the B class of vehicle type 81, 85, 89, 8A, 8C (Audi 80/90) then 8D, 8E, 8K and 8W for Audi A4. Just to mess with your head, the 80/90 Coupe was always a type 85 up until 1989 when it became a type 8B and the 80/90 cabriolet was a type 8G. The A5 Coupe and 5 door was a type 8T, then F5 and the cabrio an 8F and then also an F5... think that's it... I need to sit down.

It is a German motor industry classification. The yanks use it a lot but it can get confusing, say an A4 Golf whatever so the cars six digit type numbers two first digits are ALMOST perfect and all six digits can almost perfectly define a cars spec. The VIN is still the best ID, unique to each car and can be linked to its full build list which is why I so often ask for it, saves guessing.
