hey guys, need a hand cos my car is costing me a fortune.
Its an audi a4 2.0 and i'm finding the car is averaging 22mpg, i doubt this is normal! most of my driving is around town and dual carrageway, i don't rag the life out of it. vag-com comes up with nothing at all, thinking the air flow meter is probably on its last leg or something. Is there anyway i can find out if the car is running rich apart from an mot centre.
    anyhelp would be great guys

Ran a 2.0 20v petrol from 98,000 to 137,000 in a year. It averaged 34-35 mpg on mixed driving.

Myne is the exactly the same, 22mpg is what i usually end up with.

Oil pump was clogged up in myne last week and still not got it back but i doubt this is a result. Oil light came on while oil was full, engine started making a terrible knocking noise from the top end. Audi said needs a replacement oil pump which will take 7 days to come in, £900.

Will update you if it improves the fuel consumption when i get it back, though i doubt it?

    Hi,

if you have access to VAG-COm read the engines codes...

    if you have the below..

    1 Fault Found:
17545 - Fuel Trim: Bank 1 (Add): System too Rich
    P1137 -- 002 -- Lower Limit Exceeded

Go into the "Measuring Blocks", and check the lambda sensor reading... this should be around 2% @ 90'c... if its up at 8-9% the lambda is at fault, which makes the car run rich and drink a little extra fuel..

i also have this issue, HOWEVER my MPG is not affected as i tend t odo loads of miles..

    Around town it will drink...

if i used Supermarket fuel or NORMAL unleaded 95 i will only pull 26-27 MPG.. if i use 97-98 Shell or Super i pull 32MPG..

These engines seem to prefer the higher RON fuel..

If you are still having issues, also check the MAF readings in VAG-com.. You could always disconnect the MAF to see if you get better MPG to check if the MAF is at fault.

also ensure the air filter is clean... even if you don't want to change it... whip the cover off and give it a shake/ bang on the floor to get the dust and dirt out of it..

    Rick

Funnily enough, my 2.0 is exactly the same! On a long run without traffic its fine, but in town it drinks like an alcoholic!

    HI ALL

I have a 1.8t getting around 30 mpg down the motorway not bad but as petrol
is now around £1.05 I am going to get it converted to LPG at around £0.50
looking at lpg details I should end up at around 50 to 55 mpg.
