Hi, I've just tried to open the bonnet with the pathetic plastic lever and either the cable has snapped or more likely pulled out of the pathetic plastic lever.

Please could someone tell me to what extent I have to disassemble the car to get do a repair? Does anyone manufacture an aluminium lever to replace the pathetic plastic one?

    thanks

Not much help, but just to say that this is a known weak spot with the mk7. Mine failed last year when the car was just 5, and I had to get the dealer to replace the cable etc. They said they'd had to do quite a lot of them. There's a plastic joining piece under the bonnet next to the wing that separates. I think you'll find other topics about this online if you have a good rummage.

Don't recall if this was the case on the Mk7 or not but increasingly on cars it is only possible to open the bonnet with the driver's door open. I suspect in a lot of cases the release mechanism has been weakened by people not realising this and pulling very hard on the release lever to try and make it move.

Pre October 2016, crap setup. There is a revised handle, bracket and catch but THE catch is, getting the bonnet open.

Thanks. I can't believe what an absolutely rubbish setup this is, combined with even worse materials. I have managed to get it open but I can't see a way of even putting it back together so it'll work. Even if I bodge it with tiewraps or something it's going to be impossible to even do what I've done this time.

I really think this is the end for me with modern VWs. They've lost the plot when it comes to design and construction. I've completely lost respect for their engineers.

It isn't the engineers, it is the accountants.
