    Hello, on 2004 MK5 1.4 FSI BKG the timing chain slipped where the two end of camshaft marks with not allow the correct tool to slot in. I needed to stop repairs and now wondering about restart but heard so many bad reports of the rare BKG engine it seems it may not be worth repairing because something else will go wrong by the BKG quirks and also it is now a 20 yr old BKG (though only done around 85k miles.)

    The upper body an interior is clean. The underneath is rusty but both sills welded and I successfully used waxoyl etc to stop the subframe getting worse There are many new engine parts from O2 sensor to EGR but now I realise that means the past owner was struggling with the fault light on and all the usual faults.

    I have much around the alternator drive belt stripped off. And only two allens bolts presently stuck in the sump before chaincover and sump comes off. The inlet is full of sludge and so I suppose that needs to come off and if the head gasket is 20 years old that ought to be changed before it goes back together as with the valve seals .

    But if I spent for example £200 on gaskets and £150 on a chain kit and then an MOT £50 plus insurance to get there. That is a lot of money and effort for a BKG that by comments on the web seems to be only briefly made and about VWs worst. Even the VW Dealer tells me it doesn't have service information on their system.

    Am I wrong to think scrapping is a sensible decision? As if I fix it it will play up in some way?

    Disadvantages of the VW BKG engine

    • The main problems are delivered by a complex intake system with many sensors.
    • This system not only often fails, but also leads to difficult starting in cold weather.
    • In second place is the unreliable timing chain, sometimes it stretches to 100,000 km.
    • Carry spare ignition coils with you, here they constantly fail.
    • More disadvantages: increased carbon formation and oil consumption at high mileage.

    I suppose I should assume that a 2004 Golf MK5 1.4 fsi with 85k miles on a BKG engine is not worth repairing as too many problems will occur when it is fixed?
