    I have a fault as seen on my VCDS log, relating to the MAF sensor. I have had faulty wiring at the boost sensor which I repaired but still have the MAF error. It doesn't go into limp mode when the EML is displayed. I replaced the MAF too and same problem still here.

    I have a cycle where I get the EML on after about 100 miles after I clear the fault code.
    Can anyone tell me what volts I should have on the wires to my MAF sensor and what wires they are?
    Which wire is the ground, etc...
    I think I need to check for a 12v, 5v and an earth, what's the other wire do?

    With VCDS can I check what value the MAF is reading and what should it be reading, can anyone tell me?

    Is implausible signal an electrical issue with the wiring or is this terminology also used to describe if the amount of air measured by the MAF is too little or too high? Or in the latter, where the amount of air is measured to be too low / high would it state something like Too low / Too high air pressure, etc?

    My MAF is a 5pin connector but only has 4 wires.
    Would someone be able to tell me, is the MAF on a bkd 2L of the frequency type or varying type. If I put my multimeter on the signal wire should it's volts go up and down as I rev the car and let the revs off?

    I'll try dig out it's wiring diagram now on ELSAWIN.

    I found the wiring diagram for the MAF sensor to the ECU, as in pic below, from Elsawin. It gives me the 4 wire colours and the pins they go to on the ECU and Maf connector. G70 is the MAF in the below pic.

    However, it doesn't tell me what each individual wire actually does / is, can anyone here tell me?

    Pin 2 is the power feed from the dash side fuse SC8 current track 95 on page 8 goes to curent track 23 on page 3, this is for a May 2006 onwards BKD.

    Thanks Crasher. Could you tell me should the voltage on the signal wire fluctuate as I rev the car?

    Also, is there a value I can compare and check against the Maf reading in VCDS to see ifs giving a realistic or in spec value?

    I'm still having this issue.

    1 Fault Found:
    000257 - Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70)
    P0101 - 000 - Implausible Signal

    I checked the wiring values at the pins of the Maf, here's their results. It's a 5pin Maf but only 4 wires actually used:

    1 = No wire
    2 = 14v
    3 = Earth
    4=5v
    5= Earth

    When I rev the car the pin4 5V doesn't fluctuate in value, it just stays at 4.99/5v. Is this behaving correctly or should it's voltage decrease / increase from 0-5v range?

    When I disconnect the MAF with the car running at idle what should happen? And also when driving with MAF disconnected what should happen?

    Is there anything else I can check? Maybe something in VCDS to help highlight a problem?

    It came from a reputable parts supplier, NTK brand. I know everyone says only use a genuine VW one but it's in it now.

    I don't really see the point of putting another MAF in the car without testing the basics of this MAF first. No one seems to know if the 5v should fluctuate between 0-5v when the car is revved? Some MAF's behave like this, some don't from what I have researched but I don't know which behaviour our VW's or more specifically a BKD golf should show? Do you know, Crasher? There's no point putting a genuine MAF in now if I can't first determine if the 5v should fluctuate when revved.

    I don't think this is a wiring issue now, I have checked and repaired the wires and they seem to be operating properly and showing as earths and 12v + 5v as I believe they should. Just not sure if the 5v should fluctuate or not?

    Ok, from reading more into this MAF testing, I see the 2 types of MAF output can be either a varying 0-5v range or the output could be a digital pulse which I will need to measure with the Hz hertz setting on my multimeter whilst revving the engine. I'll check that tomorrow with the engine ideling and being revved.

    So my 4 wires seem to be:
    - constant 12v for the MAF itself
    - earth for the Maf's 12v
    - output signal wire 5v or digital pulse
    - earth for the output signal

    Does these 4 wires that I am assuming relate to the above make sense, seem correct? 2 earths, a 12v and a 5v output wire?
    Is the 12v supply for the intake temperature part of the sensor, these VW MAF's have an inbuilt air temp sensor I think?

    I tested the MAF readings this evening, it seems to be giving good values. And the grams/second g/s value at idle doubled as I doubled the revs as I believe it should.
    My engine off reading was 0.113g/s. My idle reading was 1.009lb/min or 7.55g/s and at 1800 revs or double idle approx, the reading doubled to 2.017lb/min or 15g/s. I believe if you double the revs the Maf value should double also.
    3000 Rpm read value of 5lb/min = 38g/s.

    I'll check the Hertz frequency reading with my multimeter tomorrow.

    I'm suspecting a hose leak now, I see my Intercooler turbo hose where it goes into the EGR or Anti shudder valve is loose, the tab is worn and the hose won't stay in, I've a new hose ordered but will be a week arriving. I have had this issue before this hose became loose so I don't think it's the root cause but obviously it's not helping so I'll fix that and look for more leaks, etc..

    I think these readings / values I obtained this evening are indicating a properly working MAF sensor, what do ye folk think? Anyone have the VW spec values to hand to compare with?

    I replaced the intercooler hose with a new one between Egr / Asd and the intercooler hard pipe and cleared the code but the EML came back after about 100 miles as usual. So i can rule out the hose.

    I would of thought they're be loads of knowledgeable folks on this forum for helping with troubleshooting MAFs, A VW Maf is a very common failure isn't it. Or is it starting to look like a lot get changed unnecessarily.

    Is the face the EML and Maf code always comes back on around the same amount of driving time after clearing suggesting it's an electrical issue?
