    Hi all,
So I am in the position where I can change my car from a VW Passat Estate to an SUV again.
I am looking at 2nd hand cars and honestly dont know what to go for.

My local BMW dealer has an X5 40d with every option thrown at it Pan Roof, Massage Seats, Head Up display, Quad zone climate control, Laser Lights etc.

But having had a number of Audi's (80 Sport, A5 Coupe, A6) I really like Audi's and fancy a big engined SUV, which leads me to the SQ7 which I would be looking at a 2020 model.

But am I missing out by not having a BMW? I know I am asking this on an Audi forum, but I think most people who have had an audi are probbably into German cars and will have an opinion. The other thing is the depreciation on M50ds make them an option as well.

    What are peoples views?

For information I need to carry a family of four and a dog crate, I have tried the dog crate in the X5 and it fits with a little bit of space left.

I also have a Landrover Defender (Td5) so winter driving is not an issue, I live in the NE of Scotland and we get snow.

    Thanks for any advice

I think, you should try both of them first. The BMW X5 is smaller then the Q7, but with an "M" performance packet it's better then a SQ7. To be honest, I heard only one time, that somebody changed from a Q7 to an M packet X5, but he never ever returned to Audi again. I hope, it helps a little bit on your quest

IMO Q7/SQ7 is one of the most practical out of all the other competing models - excellent boot space, plenty 2nd-row legroom, 3 individual 2nd-row chairs all with ISOFix (so possible to have the second child seat in the middle and leave the window seat free for another adult), usable occcational 3rd row seats (with ISOFix), all rear seats fold completely flat. Plenty of power from various engine options, very comfortable and also offers all the tech gadgets to my fancy (matrix lights, head up display, air rides etc etc).
X5 maybe better to drive but that's not what I am looking for in a family SUV.

To give an update I test drove the X5 and it was very good. I then drove to Glasgow a couple of weekends later and test drove an SQ7. My own opinion is that whilst the X5 felt a little sharper to drive the Audi was more comfortable. Interior wise the Audi is so much nicer. My wife preferred the look of the SQ7 as well and my eldest daughter thought it is posher.

So I am in hotel just outside Glasgow having picked up the SQ7 today.

    Think it looks fantastic.

As an aside I think the gesture control on BMWs is dreadful. Also I think it is quite shocking that quad zone climate control is not standard on the Audi.
