The next issue on my radar to sort out is the play on the left side of my steering rack. It was an MOT pickup for a couple of years running, but I have yet to address it since I bought the car this year.
I can see no spares available for repair of the rack, but if the play is not getting any worse, seemingly, then it would seem likely that something isn't tight enough, as opposed to wear.
Does anyone have any pointers to address the issue? It doesn't seem particularly efficient if the whole rack needs to be replaced, especially as the subframe needs to be dropped to do so.
To clarify, it is the nearside that appears to be the problem and can be felt at the wheel and through the steering, if turned side to side.

    Solved:
LH track rod end was very worn. Replaced and steering play has disappeared.

If it is just the left that could be the racks inner support bushing which isn't easy to obtain or the track rod inner joint which is easy to buy and replace.

As per usual, I'll just have to bite the bullet and have a look, but I like to have spares to hand when taking things apart and committing.

Yes, we like to have what we think we will need at hand, I am just about to start a full front to back mechanical rebuild on a 95 Audi S2 Avant and I spent hours working through the parts system and workshop manuals listing everything I could think of and then spent months gathering all the parts together from Germany but still I reckon I have only hit 95% of what I need so for the rear end alone we have booked two weeks with it dead on one of the lifts.
