    Hi All,

When stopped in traffic with blower on I'm getting a strong burnt oil smell into the cabin, it appears oil is dripping onto the manifold and you can also see signs of smoke from under bonnet. A friend has suggested that it could be from the VVT gasket/seal. I have a new cam cover seal to replace but he said it could be worth doing this VVT one at the same time.

Could someone shed some light on the complexity of replacing this gasket?

    Regards
    Roy

The 90 degree pipe from the oil filter crankcase breather is prone to splitting, I had one in last week from the local Audi main dealer who could not fix it, the stench of crankcase fumes around the front of the car was so obvious I could not comprehend how they missed it.

    Thanks Crasher,

I will take a look at that. However, I do have actual signs of oil seeping from the back of the cam cover gasket dripping onto the manifold hence the need to change it and have heard that it is also wise to change the VVT gasket and was wondering the complexity of this task or is it even a known issue?

    Cheers Chris

It is usually the VVT gasket or 1/2 round seal, we lift the VVT unit up a bit by slackening the cams, clean out and fit a new gasket and seal with a smidgin of RTV on the seal. On mine I had a second seal, trimmned off the lips and RTV'd it in front of the other one, I think it is a poorly designed part that could do with an aftermarket upgrade.

Ok thanks, that makes sense. If I am needing to loosen off the camshaft, do I need a tool or possibly make some marks to keep everything in position?

    Cheers

You are supposed to compress the VVT unit but you should be able to lift it up enough the replace the parts.
