Sharan goes back into garage for investigation of sticking gears at my request. What should i ask them to look at , or replace if necessary..Any gear lever bushes or steel cable ends or a worn clutch pedal assembly ? What is the significance of gears changing smoothly when starting from cold and playing up when warm ? I really need them to fix this one way or the other after so many attempts.Running the car in town traffic doing the creche run and shopping etc is a daunting operation . Thanks for the all the tips . Never had any bother with my older 1998 sharan 1.8 t petrol model built at Auto Europa .

Could this engine cold,- gears working / engine warm , 1st and reverse NOT disengaging be solved by using a different type of gearbox oil ,fully synthetic for example IF its got semi synthetic in ? Answers on a postcard please to : Dr.Iving Menuts.

Thanks everybody for your info on sticking first and jamming reverse gear after new clutch and new hydraulic damper pipes and tubes fitted . After a bit more bleeding out of air in hydraulic clutch line it seems that this may have solved an ongoing mystery problem with gears not behaving. So far travelling daily 16 -20 km per day over several days in town traffic the Sharan hasnt had gear problems.Thats a great relief .

Scarry in busy traffic especially when first or reverse wont release but jam untill ignition is turned off . Not popular with other drivers. On reversing into driveway after all this there is a burning smell wafting from the new clutch plate. Can it be a problem of the pedal assembly itself ? All looks ok under gear lever boot.If i can give my garage any tips as they seem stumped by this, that would be great. Its a 2004 tdi 1.9 lhd model . 241,000km on the clock. Due a service the dash says in 2,800km.
. ONGOING PROBLEM still MONTHS LATER.—-
After a few months with full new clutch kit :,Sachs, and checking hydraulic fluid level / ok ,the clutch pedal dropped to the floor and was not easy to raise by foot ( due to wearing toeless sandals!!).Thats when the gear lever jammed . vehicle immobile , temporarily but raising pedal by hand several times then pumping it by foot got some pedal pressure back and find neutral to get the kilometer home . Pedal dropped again outside driveway so manually pulled it up and had enough fluid pressure to reverse into driveway. I did get a few hundred kilometers with clutch working ok but on any journey i could detect a very slight drop in clutch pedal at times but this had no adverse effects .Not sure if i can risk driving 3 klns to a garage.? Car will probably behave on the day and being a busy time ill be sent away with this ongoing undetectable problem .I know from a forum in Germany that Sharans can have mystery clutch problems .My garage tried their best to find the fault after fitting clutch and “damper “assembly .Its coming up for 20 years old soon but generally is in good condition and not a huge mileage at 242,000.The windscreen wipers dont finish their cycle past two weeks and stop midscreen after an odd stacatto movenent like slow motion .Cant workout if thats a Relay electrical problem or old unlubricated moving parts. Waiting time here is around 3 weeks to book a repair. Any tips or advice welcome thanks .

Can't really help on the clutch. Does it bleed straight away if you remove cap?

Wipers on our Touran were playing up in a similar way. Took the motor / arms unit off to clean up and grease anywhere that looked like it might benefit. Been OK for about 5 years since.
