    Hi all,
I am in the process of deciding between two Golf MK7s, both are DSG petrol vehicles.
When I ran an HPI check on both vehicles I noticed the differences in transmission under spec:

2016 'MATCH EDITION TSI BM' has a 6 Speed Semi Auto
    vs
2014 'GOLF SE BLUEMOTIN TECH TS' has a 7 Speed S-Auto

It was my understanding that the 'Match Edition' was the last run of the SE spec with a few cosmetic options thrown in prior to the launch of the Mk8.

Appreciate if someone could kindly confirm my understanding.

If this is the case, any idea if the 6 Speed Semi Auto on the 2016 vehicle is an improvement on the 7 Speed S-Auto in the older 2014 vehicle?

I am unable to find any detail mentioning the variance in transmission between the SE and Match Edition spec in the Mk7.

    Thanks in advance!

Neither are semi automatics, they are DSG so automated manuals. The 6 speed will be the oil clutch DQ250 which is very reliable if properly serviced and the 7 sped will be the dry clutch DQ200 which is a pile of ****.

The SE was only offered at the start of the Mk& run (same happened with the Mk6 too). The Match upgraded the spec, we had a 2012 Mk6 Match, 2015 Mk 7 Match, 2017 Mk7 Match Edition and currently a 2020 Mk8 Life. You do not say what engine the cars you are looking at have but from what I can see from the brochures at the time only the 2.0TDi Golf had the 6 speed DSG, all of the other petrol and diesel cars had the 7 speed DSG box.

The Match improved on the SE spec by adding Adaptive Cruise Control, Front & Rear Parking Sensors and folding door mirrors as the key items. The Match Edition which was a late run out before the Mk7 Facelift in 2017 added Navigation and Winter pack to the Match Spec.

    Hope this helps

Apologies, the cars I am comparing are both Petrol, 1.4L
What you have said is also confirmed in Volkswagen Golf Mk7 - Wikipedia.
Looks like HPI has it wrong for the 2016 vehicle

QQ - Is there a site where you can enter the vehicle VIN and get the detailed manufacturer spec that came with the vehicle?

    Thank you!

Not withstanding Crashers comments on the boxes, which ever car you go for, make sure it has been serviced as specified by VW. Both boxes require a fluid change at 4 years or 38k miles and this service is essential if you are to limit the potential for issues. The 2014 car should have had 2 services as a minimum (or be due one now in which case get it done as a condition of buying the car) and the 2016 car should have had one service. Depending on the mileage of the cars they could have been due to have additional services. Also fluid changes on these boxes are not a simple task of drain out what is there and add new, it requires a proper understanding of the process and best left to those who now what they are doing

Not aware of that, but this link (Opens an external link) takes you to the VW website and allows you to download year specific brochures which may help
