We are having the problem of one side of the cars ventilation system blowing hot whilst the other side is blowing cold.

After searching on this issue it appears that a failed temperature sensor is likely to be the cause, but I'm unsure where they are located. Some suggest that they are located within the side vents but others say they are located behind the a/c unit in the centre console.

Can anyone confirm their location and how easy they are to replace?

They are in the main duct after the short duct which connects to the event, part number 3D0 907 543 A and £37.34 retail inc. We have done a passengers and that was glovebox out, drivers looks evil. It would be sensible to study the measuring blocks first to see what they are feeding back.

Remove the lower trim under steering wheel and you should be able to access it from there. Also check measuring blocks in vcds for temp readings

What should I expect to see? I have OBD11 instead of VCDS, will I still be able to check the measuring blocks? If so where will I find them?

No idea about OBD11, but in VCDS, the reported temperature value should be consistent with the air coming from the vents- So with the engine cold, the reported temperature should be ambient, and the same as the other side, as the engine warms the reported temperature should rise. If this is the case, the sensor is fine, and a damper flap motor has seized.
If the sensor is faulty, it will be reporting a temperature lower than the zone's set point on the climatronic unit, which is opening up the heating flap to try to achieve the set point temperature.
A totally implausible value, ie -200 should trigger a fault code.
