My wife is worried (understandably) about getting a puncture on her Polo while driving on a Smart Motorway.
She asked me to find out about fitting Run Flat Tyres to her car.
Has anyone any experience of this?
Do I just go to a reputable tyre place and get them to fit them? Maybe I need new wheels also?
    Mike

I can't see a protocol for it, it is an interesting question. Certainly I would see it needing matching wheels and the other aspect to consider is the ride quality will suffer terribly.

In a VW wheel / tyre guide they talk about run-flats requiring an "EH2" code on the rim, which is an "extended hump" on inner and outer edge of rim to keep the (deflated) tyre from hopping over it.

Some wheels for some cars have that, but not all wheels for all cars and none that I could see for a Polo. The Riverside (standard-ish Polo ~2012 15") alloy I happen to have accessible says H2 on it, but not EH2. Also couldn't see any other VW 5 x 100 / ET ~40 wheels that would take them.

Quick read elsewhere suggests that EH2 is recommended but not required by various tyre manufacturers. TPMS is the other requirement of most manufacturers, and VW.

Personally if it was just for the straight line drive off of the motorway to a place of safety when the TPMS light comes on I'd be happy with run-flats on a standard rim being a sensible choice. Weaving around country lanes even at reduced speed I'd be more cautious of. Most people have probably never heard of the EH2 requirement, so are using them on whatever rims they had anyway.
