Hi everyone I am hoping someone can help I bought a mk6 gt tsi back in January. By the time I got it home there was lights flashing on the dash. I plugged a fault code reader in and it was misfiring so I took it to a local garage where it’s been ever since. I managed to source a reconditioned engine for it which was supposed to be a CAVD the same as was already in but when they took the old one out and put it next to the new one it wasn’t the same. So they checked the part number on the timing cover and it turns out the one I’ve been sent is a BLG from a mk5. The guys who supplied the engine have put a note to change the timing cover and possibly the cam shaft cover but the garage say there’s an oil feed on the block on the BLG which on the CAV is on the timing cover so if they do that there’s going to be a hole in the block. So I was wondering if anyone knows a way to make this work? As the engine guys are really difficult to get hold of and I’ve recently seen a lot of reviews from people saying they’d ordered engines and not received them so I don’t think I’ll get a replacement or my money back and the garage is refusing to go any further with the swap as they say it’s the wrong engine

You can't use a BLG in a CAVD installation, the CAVD engine is a piece of junk, the last one I tried to rebuild nearly put me in a psych ward and I have been building VAG engines for over 40 years; now the only way we will deal with them is using a VAG exchange engine.

Are they not basically the same engine? It’s just a bare engine all the electrics and stuff from my old one will be going on it. Where do I get a vag exchange one from?

VAG exchange engines for the trade come from TPS. The two engines are similar but with many critical differences such as different camshafts which the ECU may pick up on; often it is no longer possible to switch engines around as it was years ago. Forty years ago in my youf I could pull the 1200 engine out of a Beetle and shove a 1600 in there, all in the time it takes to make a cup of tea but it isn't like that anymore.

It depends where you strip back to. Main casting with cylinder bore centres and diameters - probably. Same piston heads / con-rod length - probably if same capacity, but could vary for tuning reasons. Same head with matching valves, cams, etc - starting to be less likely.

Depending where problem was with yours you might end up moving the failing bits across to make the engine "the same". Conversely you might be able to take the required repair bits from the BLG if they happen to be the same on the CAVD.

Bought new the BLG block is part number 03C 103 011 AP and the CAVD is 03C 103 011 AR. If the donor engine was built pre 22/10/07 then the rear crank oil seal and speed sender are different.

So the guys I bought the engine off are now saying it is a CAVD but there’s two kinds one with the turbo oil feed on the block and one on the timing cover is this correct? The garage are saying it’s not because of the oil feed and it’s got a different kind of oil filter so they say it’s either a blg or Bmy so isn’t going to work

The chain cover should have a data sticker on it. Every CAVD I have ever worked on has the turbo oil feed from the timing chain cover and the the cover is the same right across CAVD production, it should look like the one in the picture in post 2

Definitely not what I ordered then whether they say it’ll work or not so I’ve contacted the bank to try get my money back paid with credit card so hopefully I’ll get it back. How much is a new one from tps and will the garage be able to order from them or do they need to have an account set up already

An exchange unit like the one in the picture, part number 03C 100 091 TX, is £6521.18 inc VAT retail, a garage with a TPS account may get a 5% discount off of the £5434.32 pre VAT price.
