    Afternoon,

I wonder if someone can stab a guess at an unusual incident the wee engine had yesterday.

Came back from a couple hundred mile run, noticed a little hesititation in 'power' (lol at the term 'power' from this engine) for the last 50 miles or so.

Pulled up at home and there was an awful reek of diseasel exhaust and burning rubber which hadn't been present during the journey. The engine had a high idle and was pretty lumpy and rough/noisy sounding.

I thought I must have stopped in the middle of a Dpf regen, the only thing is that the fan didn't come on when I turned off the ignition which I thought should happen? Also the fuel was below a quarter tank which I also thought prevented a regen? Oil temp was sitting at 94 but climbed to 97 when the temp usually drops after a run and then idle.

No leaks or anything around injectors or pipes , it's had 4 new ones a few hundred miles ago, everything I can see appears dry.

But today, everything as normal, albeit without a long run.

Any suggestions as to what might've caused this, or points to something on its way out? This car gets used to go up to the far NW Highlands and I can't risk something packing in in the middle of nowhere, if that's at all possible.

    Cheers

Where did these "new" injectors come from?

The new injectors are Continental I believe, they were supplied by one of the biggest diesel specialists here, going since 1956 and highly reputable, so no chance of them being 'knock-offs'!

Swithered about fitting them myself but my torque wrench doesn't do such small values so an Independent VAG place did them for me. They are also very reputable so the chances of them bodging something is slim. Not impossible mind you, but doubtful.

And you know they entered the IMA coding value?

I'm sure they will have done?

The car ran/runs (apart from the 'incident') smoothly enough, with excellent mpg since they were changed. Would it run well if that hadn't been done correctly?

It depends on how far out the actual IMA value was compared to the coding, it is quite a wide window.

    Oh right.

So what do you suggest? Is it not just a case of entering the code on the injectors, or is there a more involved method like a calibration of some sort after the codes are entered?

    Okey doke, thanks for that.

I'll call and check with them, although I'm guessing they will have done, their smallish garage is like an operating theatre, all tiled floors and clean workbenches and the three guys are ex-VAG.

Assuming they were coded in correctly, any suggestions what might have caused the intermittent loss of power and the strange diesel and burning rubber smell, along with the rattling/lumpiness? I know it must be near impossible to guess at a distance, but I'd welcome any suggestion of where to start looking! Should the fan always run if a regen was interrupted?

    Much appreciated, thanks.

From your description I can't see them not having done it. It does sound like a DPF related issue so getting the soot and ash stats checked would be a good idea. I did a CAYC engined Golf 6 service yesterday, when I brought it in the fans were on high but no codes, I checked the stats and the soot was at 20% so I did the login and then a service regen whilst standing which brought it down to 1.27% after about 20 mins.
