53 plate AVF 1.9 tdi 130 avant. It needs aux belt service and a wheel bearing so it's going into the garage soon and I wondered what if anything else to mention or get checked/changed while it's in given the below...

Last July I heard a funny clattery noise when the car was idling but never did anything to investigate further and nothing was flagged by garage on this (plenty of other stuff!) when it went in for service and MOT. I took this video but not sure it's much use

Looking back steering became heavier until at Easter this year it started becoming jerky as well when making big/sudden turns.

I topped up the fluid (got proper vag hydraulic fluid) as it was at min mark when cold which I understood to be ok but more can be added.

Seemed to work ok for a few weeks then same symptoms started again. Noticed it on longer journeys and with regular short trip use but sometimes after it's sat for a couple of days steering is ok for a while before problems kick off again.

I can't hear the clatter any more and there's no other scary noises that other threads mention when steering.

I've tried to test alternator clutch by moving fins with a screwdriver and sure enough it only span one way and not the other.

Car wasn't used for a few days in a row this week then today when wife got back from short trip to town she said steering seemed ok. I tried dry steering lock to lock a few times idling sat on the drive and it seemed smooth.

It seems the steering gets "better" after having a "rest" for few days?!

    Thanks for any advice,
    Cheers
    Ian

Car's booked in next week for service and aux belt change plus investigating this steering issue and what I think is a wheel bearing.

    Any thoughts appreciated.
    Cheers,

The symptom is certainly redolent of a failed alternator one way clutch fault, but you have tested it and it works. I would still suggest belt, tensioner, and pulley to see how that affects the steering.

Thanks for the input Crasher. I'll pass that on to the garage and see what they reckon.

    Cheers,

So I think the rattle and the lumpy steering are two different things.

The garage said the alternator clutch pulley and tensioner seemed fine but that the rack is the cause of the steering issues. They said it's rough lock to lock and there's excessive play on both inner rack arms.

Annoyingly I couldn't make the heavy/jerky symptoms happen when I took it for a test drive with the mechanic but does that seem a reasonable diagnosis by the garage?

Seems the rack has been the cause of others steering woes:

The rattle is definitely coming from the AC compressor. When I had it up on the ramps the rattle changed to a clanky whirr when I turned the AC on to max. Guess I'll start another thread for that...

Rattle from AC compressor doesn't seem to merit another thread I'm fairly certain it must be similar to these:

Where to get cheap used/reconditioned air con compressor?

If this compressor pulley is a relatively cheap fix then hopefully it's just the rack that'll kill my wallet. Garage quoted ~£700 (split 50/50 part and labour)

Assuming it is front wheel drive, there is only one version, 8D2 422 052 A and this is obsolete from Audi UK both in new and exchange versions, not available from the manufacturer ZF or even Audi Tradition. due to ZF expanding and buying competitors the EU got ****** about market monopolies and made ZF sell the Lenksysteme devision to Bosch (a small company you may never have heard of) at which point the supplies of old ZF steering spares in the UK went from great to ****. The only company I can recommend is https://shop.westernpowersteering.co.uk
