Hi all bought a Vw Jetta not so long ago and the P0234 code was coming up and the car was going into lim at about 120-150km( just turned the ignition on and off to reset it) turbo went on the car eventually, I bought a used turbo and got a mechanic to install it for me I’m having the same problem, the turbo also had a barely noticeable whistle to it spoiling up, but now I have a P0401 as-well, i took the egr off and clean it out thoroughly and made sure the valve was working, reinstalled it and still the same unfortunately, im thinking maybe the diaphragm has failed. I also used a fuel additive turbo cleaner and still no results any ideas or theory’s welcome please

The P0234 is probably "sticky vanes" inside the turbo unless it was opened up and cleaned well prior to install. I fixed it on one of ours by starting to use the car for a daily 50km commute on the motorway. The extra heat and whizz sometimes clears out the soot that makes it sticky.

For the P0401 which part of the EGR system did you look at? I fixed ours by removing the EGR cooler at the back of the engine and cleaning it out - it was packed full of soot. The valve near the air intake manifold is not related to this. BTW, this soot is incredibly black and staining - the clothes I was wearing at the time ~2 years ago have had numerous washes since and it still hasn't washed out.

The BKD is VERY prone to carbon fouling of the turbo vanes, as far as a fuel additive goes with cleaning the turbo, you would have just as much success if you told the car a bedtime story. With the turbo having been changed and you now getting P0401, make sure the code P0234 has not changed to P0235 as the symptoms are the same but the cause different.
