My wife's 2013 Mk6 Golf cabrio has been suffering poor radio reception for some time, whilst she is sort of happy streaming via Bluetooth it does consume mobile data and anyhow, the radio should work properly. With diagnostic help from Crasher, I have replaced both aerial amplifiers (in the A pillars on a cabrio, not the tailgate or boot lid) so those as individual parts are ruled out, a similar drop in signal quality on my own Mk6 hatch was one of the aerial amps. The car has recently had a new windscreen (which has the aerials in it) but the problem was there before that. The head unit ahs never been taken out. VCDS shows no faults.
Has anyone got any ideas where to start looking for a bad earth or damaged wires in the loom?

I'd try and rule out the head unit first. Do you have an alternate FM aerial like one of the "T tape" ones that often come with a house mini-hifi unit? One wire from it held in the centre of the aerial connection with a cocktail stick whilst the other is touched to the outside should give a decent signal. Or just get an aftermarket DAB / FM car aerial to see if it helps. If so they will often work quite well if tucked behind the glovebox, etc.

In case you're new to this, radio signal co-ax "guides" radio signals rather than "conduct" them. In practice that means that crushed or bent co-ax suffers large signal loss. Nice round cable with gentle bends is what you're aiming for.

Thanks for that. I have tried using a Pure Highway which received DAB but connects via FM to the head unit but even as a local signal source it was still poor. I'll run a trace on the coax. There has been no work behind the dash area in the 3 years we've had the car but I guess a cumulative area of damage dating right back to a small kink or crush in earlier work or even at build, might have caused it to get worse over time.
