Many thanks for that! I had found this website:
    https://www.eco-torque.co.uk/post/vw...arbox-problems
and from there my friend thinks that it is the mechatronics unit that is playing up, based on the symptoms. I forwarded the information to her, she will make a decision.

    Thanks again, much appreciated!

My friend spoke with Infinity Auto Solutions in Aldershot and she was very impressed by the thoroughness of their preliminary assessment over the phone. The car will go in next week, I will update the outcome here. Thanks a lot again!

A quick update about Infinity Auto Solutions in Aldershot DSG Gearbox Repair Experts in Aldershot | Diagnostics & Repair
My friend has had the car with them for a whole week now, and they can't figure out what is the problem, no fault codes recorder, they said. They noticed that the car is overfueling, they suspected the clutch first, and then they found it overfueling. My friend is not happy with the way they are beating about the bush, finding all sorts of excuses as to why they can't find what is wrong and how they are short-staffed, to the point that she will be taking the car to another garage, at the expense of paying for it to be towed. She suspects that they are behaving like that due to her age, which is not conducive to trust. Just in case someone might be interested to know about this garage.

That sounds a bit harsh. My first thought is that it's a shame your friend feels people are trying to exploit her, and I hope that isn't a common thing for her.

If it is overfuelling and they are gearbox specialists then it may be somewhat beyond their skills - which is unfortunate.

Everyone above is saying it's likely to be an intricate / expensive repair. Without diagnostic codes to guide them they could have just dived in trying Part A, B, C, etc which could have cost £000 and still not fixed it. To me not doing that is a sign of responsible behavior.

A fair point. She is not the victimisation type, and she is not offended by it, it does happen every so often. At the end of the day she will do what she thinks is best. These newer motorisations are fiendishly complex, God help both garages and customers when problems occur.

Well, all's well that ends well. The issue seemed to have been contaminated fuel, which surprised her, as she has been refuelling solely with Shell V-Power petrol. Fuel system flushed and all is well, the car behaves, no mechanical issue was found. She is bemused by how the fuel got contaminated, but she has a better opinion of the garage now, and she admitted she might have been too harsh on them.

Glad it is all sorted. If the Shell garage where she last filled up before the issues is local might be worth her popping in and telling them she had an issue traced to contaminated fuel. No finger pointing as it could have become contaminated after it went in to the car but worth mentioning in case they have had other cases.
