    Hello all,

My A4 has been sounding rough from the bottom end for a while now, thought it'd be something on the aux belt but removed the belt and no difference, also changed the crank pulley, no difference. Thought it must be something on the timing belt so changed the belt, full kit including water pump, no difference - also found the old belt wasn't running straight on the pulleys so lucky I changed it! Running true now!

You can here the noise all the time from outside of the car but it's much more apparent underneath, at the crank pulley end of the engine, I've attached a video link ( I didn't film it on a potato, youtube has reduced quality), it's that tappy, clicky, metallic noise. It's the same with no aux belt on, also clutch operation doesn't affect it.

    Cheers,

    Mike

Hi Mike, my first post here and I'm sorry to be the potential bearer of bad news with it. That almost certainly sound like the infamous BLB chain driven balancer failing tensioner, that I'm sure you must be aware of. So many BLBs died an early death due to this tensioner failing and the chain coming lose and destroying the teeth on the cogs, that they seem to be a rare surviving engine now. Many that do had the chain driven balancers converted to the gear driven ones later found on the BRE engines. Compounded to which all these engines also live under the Damocles sword of a 77mm hex key, rounding off on the oil pump, driven off that unit. Not all die early though - my 230K+ miles 2006 Avant S-line BRE engine is still running sweetly. Long life service schedules particularly didn't help the longevity of a bad design either.

If you can afford it and warrant it for this car, since it's an expensive fix, you should get both issues seen to, as soon as possible. It involves dropping the sump, not a quick job since the front subframe has to come out of the way, and replacing the whole assembly of balancer drive with a gear driven unit and a modified, hardened 100mm hex key and drive shaft, such as provided by KMB engineering in Sheffield (Oil Pumps from KMB Parts Direct specialist Oil pump replacement parts, Audi 2.0tdi, VW 2.0tdi, engines, support, help, advice, Sheffield, UK, England. - Kit 12 I believe, for your car). I'm going to get the modified hex key, from them, done on mine soon, even though my engine runs fine, just as a preventative - a big expense for a 16 year old car but I want to do a lot more miles in the old faithful yet.

I don't know how long you've had this noise or when the inevitable will happen but the alternatives range from a dead engine with just a blown turbo to a damaged beyond repair crankshaft journals and camshafts, requiring a new engine - if you ever see a red low oil pressure warning light, stop immediately (safely of course) and do not drive any further and switch off. I'm sorry to be alarmist but the only other sound similar to this tends to be the A/C compressor pulley perished rubbers and you have eliminated that by removing the auxiliary belt to no effect. So much of a problem was this that I'm always surprised to hear of surviving untouched BLB 2.0 TDIs., what's the mileage on yours and best of luck?
