I have been the happy owner of a 2003 2ltr petrol (ALT) A6 saloon with MultiTronic gearbox for the last 15 years. It has now done 325k and I have no plans of retiring it just yet. It's still comfortable, cruises well and the LPG conversion I had done keeps the fuel costs down, as well as ULEZ compliant! When things get broken, they get fixed.

However, over the last year or so I have been struggling to diagnose a slight "wobble" during any kind of acceleration between about 30 to 50mph. I say "wobble" as it's too faint to be called a judder. The engine sounds fine with no perceptible misfires, nor are there any error codes. It does it whether in manual or CVT mode. Around the same time I started noticing a gentle pulsing when braking, like the pressure is fluctuating rather than the ABS actuating. Again no error codes.

The gearbox has been rebuilt in the last year, the CAM belt was done at about the same time along with the MAF and a new throttle body was fitted a few years ago. I tried some used injectors but they made no difference. I'm pretty sure the engine and gearbox mounts have been changed over the years as well. An Audi specialist who ran a data logger on a test drive recently thought it could be a sticking valve, due to the mileage, but I don't understand how that could only affect that specific speed range whether accelerating either slightly or with your foot mashed to the floor. If I remember correctly, the valves were re-seated the last time the head gasket was done - thanks to a failed oil cooler, the second time that happened - at about 215k, so possibly 8 or 9 years ago.

So after all that, I'm left wondering if the pedal position sensors are becoming slightly faulty, but not enough to cause an error code. Has anyone else experienced something similar?

Did you know that LPG supply in the UK is being phased out? You could have two problems there, I would have the runout of the brakes checked and the disc surfaces for corrosion, especial on their reverse. Could I have the cars VIN please?

Thanks Crasher, I hadn't seen the recent announcement by MFG - following Shell by increasing the number of charge bays at the expense of LPG pumps - even though they weren't located in the same place. But there are still plenty of options so I'm not that worried for the next few years. I've recently found the interactive map CIDRAM very useful as you can see prices and if pumps are working. It stands to reason that as the number of pumps diminish the ones left will get more business, so are more likely to keep them.

Anyway, back to the matter in hand, the discs and pads have been changed in the last few years with only about 15k done since due to the pandemic. VIN is WAUZZZ4B44N006953.

Have you have a code read done? Would this quote from TPI 2004856/27 cover your symptoms? "Upon forward acceleration from stationary (0 km/h), the vehicle judders firstly after a few meters, with a vibration in the transmission being felt. This complaint can be described as like a jolting clutch and can sometimes be observed as a fluctuation in engine speed on the rev counter"

No, it's only noticeable between 30 to 50mph.

Do you know if the box basic settings were carried out?

I'd assume so as it was upgraded to a 7 plate clutch during the rebuild. It was done by JT Automatics in Erith if that helps? And the wobble was present before the rebuild.

I can't see in ELSA how you convert the six disc input shaft to seven and ETKA does not state if the replacement input shaft for the GHW box 01J 323 355 AX is six or seven disc BUT I am no 01J clutch pack expert as in the event of failure we fit the exchange input shaft and it is a while since I did one of those; I am surprised the input shaft is still available.

Apologies for the hiatus on this Crasher, it slipped my mind due to holidays and whatnot. Then I thought I'd wait until after having the 12k / 1 year check on the box rebuild, which has now been done. Had a chat with them about it and decided to just live with it, as it's so slight I could drive myself crazy (and possibly spend loads of money) trying to find it. I really appreciate the time you took to reply though, thanks.

Finally, if anyone reads this thread and says "hey, I had that problem on my Audi" (like 2 different mechanics I've spoken to) then please reply with how yours was resolved.
