    Evening all,

Over the next couple of weeks I’m going to be swapping from a Golf 1.5 tdi that I’ve had from new (now 3 years old) to a 2006 Passat estate.

My daily commute is 40 miles total with roughly 20 miles being motorway, 15 miles of 50mph A Roads and 5 miles of mixed slower driving with a bit of stop start. How will the Passats DPF handle this kind of journey? Will I know when it’s doing a regen, when the Golf does one it’s quite obvious but I’m unsure about the older technology?

thanks for any advice / tips

You probably won't notice the regeneration at all as my daily commute used to be 2 miles at 30mph, 25 miles at 60mph, 5 miles motorway 70...ish! then finally 3 miles of winding country lanes and through villages. The reverse on the way home.

Exhaust / DPF temperatures on such a journey would be easily sufficient for passive regeneration as opposed to active regeneration where the car decides it is time to heat things up a bit by dumping extra fuel into the mix. Rarely did I notice anything over the years I had to do that commute. On the other hand when I changed work locations to only 14 miles each way, the active regeneration was a spectacle of clouds of oil smoke for a minute or two, as I need a valve stem seal or two replaced, a pig of a job, have done it once already.

I would be more worried about the oil pump than the DPF, especially if it is early 2006!

    Crasher,
Any idea what size the shell bearings are inside the balancer unit, mine seem very smooth and worn so I'm hoping to source some new replacements from a bearing supplier?

I see fully refurbished balancer units online for £342 these days but wanted to keep my rebuild costs down a bit.

In the old balancer? No idea as the scrap man threw it in his van yesterday… it had done 180k (and was dated 06/2006, therefore the original) so must have been worn. We will only fit new genuine units with a new crank drive gear so we get the peace of mind of a two year dealer backed warranty. When cleaning the sump yesterday the mechanic Matt commented on how clean the sump was internally, this is because the owner sticks to 9000 mile oil changes and is good evidence to show that the stupid LongLife service regime was more to blame than a silly 6mm hex key. Incidentally the pump end of the key showed absolutely zero wear. Changing the crank spur gear is evil compared to the chain sprocket, it broke the tool! £90 and on back order
