I’m buying it as agreed. If it goes wrong so be it I’ll just have to get it fixed.

    Afternoon all,

I wasn’t really aware of the oil pump / balancer shaft issue on these engines until quite recently.

Is it worth burying the car in the title? Is has very good service history, a stack of paperwork and done 130k.

I’m not a mechanic so not able to do the replacement / upgrade from KMB.

    Cheers for any input.

    Chris.

It would not cost a great deal to have a garage who knows what they are doing to drop the sump and remove the drive key to see what condition it is in and replace it anyway so buying you some breathing space.

Good as the potential damage of it "going wrong" is a possibility of damage to the turbo, other engine damage or even seizure depending on where and how fast you are going should it happen.

As Mr C has said he's just got one with 180k, and mine also with an impeccable service history, part dealer the rest me, first failed at around 150k. An inferior replacement saw it fail again at 190k. Now has a KMB unit with some 40k on it now, I just need to sort the bottom end bearings now (potentially a fuller rebuild but the head and cams are half as old).

On the one we are doing, as with all of them, we remove the rod bearings, mick the journal and fit new bearings and bolts; there is no point doing one which has failed and then finding the crank is FUBAR.
