    Hi All,

Looking for a bit of support, and to hopefully share knowledge relating to this issue.

I'll make sure to post back once the issue is resolved.

Vehicle is a manual Touran 1.9 BXE, 2008 MY.

Issue is a poor (lazy) first start of the day.

She fires immediately (no hard start or long cranking), but then generally chugs and labors for a few seconds before springing into life (almost like its running on 2 or 3 cylinders momentarily ?).

Its as if the ECU its confused for a while, then realises where things are at then sorts itself out.

Idle is perhaps a little bit erratic for the first few mins from cold, but the straightens out for the rest of the day no problems.

Every start for the rest of the day is fine.

No codes on VCDS, torsion is approx-0.5 with 13mm screws near enough center of the slots.

In truth, the fault seems to have appeared after recently doing the timing belt / water pump / tensioner.

So maybe a coincidence, have upset something (ie fuel lines) or the timing is out.

Although the car fired up immediately after the timing belt replacement and ran without issue for 100 miles or so.

More recently, the following jobs have also been completed but the issue persists:

    • Replaced Alternator clutch pulley / belt / tensioner
    • New Varta battery
    • New thermostat
    • Main earth connections remade around and under battery area
    • 4 x new glow plugs
    • Alternator wiring loom repaired due to area of chaffing
    • New boost pipe elbow & intercooler boost pipe gasket to sort boost leaks
    • New DMF / clutch / slave cylinder (DMF was completely shot but that's another story)
    • Fully serviced all fluids and filters

Ive tried various Torsion values between ~+3 / -3 but this doesn't seem to make a difference.

(Im considering further testing further testing between -6 / +6 just to rule this out)

I wonder if its losing its prime - or could be a dodgy Tandem pump - or maybe an injector related issue?

I've noticed a couple of weeps at the Tandem pump feed and return lines, which I've since nipped up.

Any help or educated pointers gratefully appreciated, I'm spending too much time trying to think this through.

It runs fine after the first start, so not quite at the stage of throwing the towel in and taking it to a VAG specialist.

    Cheers!

Disconnects the injector harness and check the cranking speed in measuring blocks, it needs to be at least 280rpm.

Hi Crasher, many thanks for the quick reply.

I'll give that a go in the next couple of days and report back.

The starter looks to be original right enough, probably the only thing I haven't changed!

    Cheers

If it is Valeo these are very prone to slow cranking.

    Small update.

Performed cranking test on VALEO starter, with Injector loom unplugged.

    Logged results in VCDS.

For the first ~second, the RPM is below spec, then it hits 273 and stays there.

Not sure if this is an issue, should the starter be able to immediately rotate the engine at the required spec?

(I'm going to run a log with the car starting normally and see what the starting figures are).

Also - had a quick look at a few other measuring blocks.

I'm getting a start synchronisation value of 48 from Group 005, should this not be a higher value if cam & crank are in sync??

273 is OK… just. Try starting it with the coolant temp sender unplugged, remember this will generate a fault code like when unplugging the injectors

    Hi Crasher,

Thanks again - yes I think its only a matter of time before a new starter is needed either way.

The Torsion reads zero from cold - not out of range as it varies between -0.5 / +0.5 when blipping the throttle from cold.

After the belt change the Torsion was -2.7 approx, mpg was excellent but the fault remained - hence tweaking it close to zero.

I'll try the temp sensor and report back...
