    Hi all,

ive done a forum search but as I’m not sure if the correct name I didn’t find anything.

im after some advice regarding the hex drive for the oil pump. Is it crucial to get it replaced asap on a car with 130k and should I go for a vw replacement or an upgraded one?

thanks loads for any help and advice

You got it , it's actually primarily a balancer shaft keyway issue as it makes for a poor fit causing wear to both keyway and for the 6 x 77mm hex drive key because it's not hard or deep enough and not even hexagonal !

I have a 2006 BKP 3C coming in tomorrow, 200k miles and the warning came on a few weeks ago but we have been up to our necks in work. We have looked after the car for many years and it has never failed, I will be fascinated to see what is in there; it will either be chain or very early spur gear. On a separate note, my MOT man just popped in and said, I've got this Passat with the oil light on...

77mm early gear, badly worn 77mm follower; the engine is so clean inside it is unreal, the block and crank surfaces are clean metal so it must be the original key, it hasn't done bad for 180k miles and there is no crank damage so he is having it rebuilt. This shows that with proper servicing this problem would have been far less prevalent, 180k miles is excellent life by any standard.

Is that amount of wear normal or is that excessive? It looks like I’ve had it in the lathe

Excessive , it only takes 0.5mm to come off the 6 peaks and the key slips in the balancer shaft keyway , the other end of the 77mm key is the oil pump cassette which is no longer turning...

Then there's the added problem of no low oil pressure warning below 2,000 rpm .
