Hi, can anyone explain to me the different suspension setups on Golf mk 7s and 8s please?

I’ve just traded in my 150ps mk8 Golf 1.5etsi Style petrol automatic for a 68 reg 130 ps mk7.5 1.5 SE Nav automatic. For all it’s (electrical) faults, the mk8 was a lovely car to drive. The ride was great and it sailed over bumps and potholes without issue. The suspension was really smooth. By comparison, the mk7.5 is like driving a bus and I find it slightly jarring as I feel a lot more of the bumps and road imperfections.

Is there a different suspension setup for mk8 Golfs or was the suspension better due to the Style being a higher spec model? Do some mk7s have a better suspension than others? Would a 150ps mk7.5 Match Edition have a different suspension to my current 130ps SE Nav?

    Thanks

Your Mk7.5 car has the multi-link rear suspension, only the 1.0 and 1.2 petrol cars and the 1.6 diesel has the simpler twisted beam rear suspension. On the Mk8 I believe they expanded the derivatives that have the (cheaper) twisted beam set-up to include the 1.5 (130bhp) and possibly both the 150 and 150 TFSie models. In reality you would expect the multi-link to give better ride and handling than the twisted beam set-up. Worth checking the alignment and tyre pressures as this may have an impact on the ride

Thanks for your reply and for the advice. I will check the alignment and tyre pressures. Hopefully that will smooth it out. Cheers

I checked the tyre pressures this morning and they were all around 39 to 40psi. I let them down to 33psi and it seems a bit better. Is 33 the correct pressure for 16” alloys?

There should be a sticker with tyre pressures either on the fuel filler flap or some where in the driver's door area, usually on the B pillar or the below the lock plate on the actual door. 33psi may be not he high side, I think my wife's Mk8 on 16" wheels is 2.0Bar which is 29 psi and from memory the her Mk7 was the same

Cheers for the reply. I checked the sticker and the advised psi is actually 39 but it says it can be set to 35 for the comfort setting. Seems quite high still, but more comfortable than previously. I

Just looks at my wife's golf 8 which has 16" wheels. For light loads it is 36psi so in line with your 35psi

Yeah, just going to have mine at 35 psi as it’s usually just me in the car. Seems to be riding better, cheers
