If it is a head gasket you will find it impossible to know which one and it is a HUGE engine out job. The heads cannot be skimmed so must be replaced, even the list of parts writes the car off never mind the 40 or so hours labour. You also need a pile of specialist tools.

Thinking the best way out here for Scott.
A dynamic compression check would probably only show a head gasket if it was really bad and if it was, there would be other symptoms.

what about an EGR blank? bit of work to get to the Y of the up pipes ( take the turbo off, correct me if im wrong crasher) but DIYable and if it was a head gasket it would less money wasted then fitting a new EGR cooler?

I would unplug the EGR valve to shut it down (this will generate an error) and then clamp the coolant hoses to see if the gases still register but I have never has much success with those kits even from Snap On as the coolant boils up into the tester and corrupts it

Sorry to you both, been struggling with Internet!.
I have actually taken off the egr cooler. The actual tubes in the cooler are made of stainless steel and look in decent condition. However, around the bottom of the tube assembly is a rubber gasket which separates the gases from the water. On the gases side the rubber does seem harder and also has tiny cracks. On the water side is better condition except 1 bigger split. Although the cracks are not all the way through, I can't help thinking this is not going to help. I will be giving it a pressure test when at work and will keep you all posted. My immediate question is, are these gaskets available anywhere!
I have included photos of the gaskets. The 2 gaskets with holes are metal.

Well, long time posting. Fitted a new egr cooler from tps. Problem still there. Had it in audi. They were useless and didn't act on my issues, instead pointing out a coolant leak from a pipe I had managed to break and said that was why the coolant was leaking! I'm tearing my hair out now! Am I right in thinking the only places that the engine can pressurise the coolant is through egr cooler and cylinder head? Or is there somewhere else I could check?

Also, is it possible to remove cylinder heads in situ?
