Hi folks, I’m new to the forum, hope you are all well.
I have a question which I’ve struggled to find a straightforward answer to from searching this forum and round the internet. I have recently bought an Audi A4 2.0TDI Avant SE 2015 off my father who owned the car from new. He’s always had it serviced annually at Audi and the car has done just 29k miles. My question is concerning the timing belt and when this ideally should be changed? I’ve seen suggestions of 60k, 90k or 5 years so far. The car feels new even now and Audi serviced it in January and did not suggest the belt be changed despite the car being 7 years old now.

Do you kind people think I should get this changed as a precaution? Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

The recommendation is every five years, However, that's from Audi UK and they're the only ones who recommend that. Personally I change mine every five years regardless. It's not cheap but it's considerably cheaper than seeing your pride and joy needing a new engine.

    Nice car by the way.

The VAG Germany point of view is 240k kilometres and that’s it, however we stick to the VAG UK advice of 5 years after 2009 as if we didn’t and one failed, we would be liable.

Many thanks to both of you for taking the time to respond. I won’t be taking it to Audi for the change I don’t think as I’m sure it’s double what it would cost in a regular local garage. What is a rough sensible cost do you know? I think in the next couple of months i’ll book it in

Really enjoying the car so far. I owned a 2013 VW Passat Highline a few years ago and they feel similar. I want to make sure I keep on top of any maintenance to avoid bigger bills, hence my question.

Hi Crasher, ever seen one break? And at what mileage? Just, you know, out of interest.

I haven't seen a failed cambelt in a decade, I think the last one was my neighbours 1.8 20v Passat 3B

For the 7 or so years I owned an A4 B8 2.0 diesel (CAGA) I was advised 5 years or 80k miles

Unfortunately for me the it needed doing twice

The first time it was changed however was at 5 years and it had done ~100k

The cost was around £450, including the water pump

If I were you, I'd get the job done and be satisfied knowing so

Spoke to my local garage and he priced up the parts need and explained the front bumper etc needs to come off as the space is tight at the front of the engine. Said it will cost between £250 and £290 for a cam belt and water pump change. He did say with the mileage on the car and after looking at it to leave it a year.
