    Hi

New member and I am hoping someone out there might be able to help with what I know is an old issue.

In the last year I noticed my 2011 Q5 was burning a lot of oil, approximately 1 litre per 600 miles. Car was due a service so when booking it into local dealership I mentioned the oil usage and they started the consumption test. Returned the car this Monday after doing 600 mile to be told the usage is outside tolerance and was presented with an estimate of £6,811 for new piston rings, con rods etc.

When I mentioned this was a known issue with the engine and asked if Audi would support me I was offered approximately £1,000 off the bill as a good will gesture by the dealership. As I still thought this was excessive for a known issue I was advised to take the problem to Audi UK. Spoke to Audi UK today who told me as the car was out of warranty there is nothing they can do and Audi UK do not do gestures of good will. They told me it is nothing to do with the car being over 10 years old. I thought I had a case as the car is low mileage for year (97,000). Audi said they do not recognise it as a known issue even though in the US it is effectively a recall and the car has a full Audi service history. Audi UK pointed me at the Motor Ombudsmen, who in turn told me there is nothing they can as the car is out of warranty . Ombudsmen pointed me at Citizens Advise who told me to contact the third party dealer I purchased the car from 5 years ago.

I know that people have managed to get Audi to foot 100% of the bill. I am not expecting it to be 100% paid based on age of the car but is anyone able to offer any advise on next steps? Not sure I am going to get anywhere with the third party dealer 5 years later based on consumer of good act.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

It is ridiculous that they say it is not a known problem but it is 11 years old with nearly 100k miles on it, this could have happened to any engine at this mileage, does it have a FULL Audi service history? I can't check as it is too old to be on the Digital Service System.

new piston rings will not cure this problem the cylinders at this mileage wear slightly oval nothing wears round so your would require a re-bore with new pistons which is supplied with the re-bore

If we were doing it I would only fit a full new exchange engine, part number 06H 100 036 C but that is a rather scary £7503.05 plus fitting but makes far more sense than a partial rebuild for £6,811 as the replacement unit is heavily revised with all the latest parts, it even comes with the revised vacuum pump (£347.52 alone) and spark plugs; if fitted by a VAT registered garage comes with a two year Audi main dealer parts and labour warranty. The engine could be stripped and rebuilt using aftermarket parts for less than that but who covers the warranty?

Yes, that is scary but I get the logic...

I'm actually considering doing the strip down and rebuild myself, it's been a while but used to do it pretty frequently on older VWs.

Is there any good sources in terms of revised parts list, torque settings, tip/gotchas etc?

Thanks again for the comments, just so gutted an Audi engine isn't good for 100K+ miles and it feels like I've missed the boat because I don't do the miles.

There are a number of special tools required plus you need to hone the bores and the pile of bits you need to order is a task in itself if you don't have ETKA with FI Suggestion. I did a similar list a few weeks ago and it was bewildering. With that age of car there are a LOT of superseded part numbers and personally if it was mine I would not rebuild it due to the huge work involved. I used to build a lot of engines, air and water cooled but from the Golf 5 EA113 onwards they just started getting stupidly complex and the EA888 used in your is fiendishly complex. I have a 5 cylinder 2.5 stroker motor to build for an 88 Audi quattro which in its day was a premium car like yours but I can build that virtually with my eyes shut and no special tools, modern cars are just getting daft!
