The MFD in my instrument cluster starts out nice and bright when you first start the engine, but within a few minutes it starts fading from the edges inwards, to the point where it becomes hard to read.

The two main repair companies seem to be Cluster Repairs UK and Autotronics. Can anyone recommend either of them? Is one more recommended than the other?

You could try AC Tronics, they repaired the centre display on an obsolete Golf 4 panel for me a few weeks ago but they only work with the trade so you would have to work through one of their agents even though they are in… Colchester…

I thought about them, but they want me to take the car to a garage and have them remove and diagnose the cluster, and presumably refit it when repaired. Did you have to pay garage labour costs for removal/installation on top of the actual repair?

I didn't but my customer did, I am a partner in a VAG specialist garage.

Yeah, this is the thing - I've already removed the cluster, so I see no point in having to reinstall it and then pay for the privilege of a garage doing what I've already done on top of the cost of repair. I did call ACTronics and they said the garage "needed to diagnose it", but let's be honest, all the garage is going to do is say "Yeah, the display's faulty, needs replacing".
