Has anyone removed and cleaned their EGR valve?

    It's something I did every 30-40k miles on my A4 B8

I'm assuming it has never been done on my A5, and at 60k it's likely to be in need of a clean soon.

There are two very different systems depending on engine code but they both soot up and it is a filthy job to clean out as you will know.

    Hi Crasher,

The logbook suggests it's the DETA engine. I'm pretty sure it's this part, but unfortunately not as accessible as the A4 B8.

It looks like it'll be easier to remove from underneath the car, along with a few other components?

So I jacked the car up and removed the 20 or so screws holding up the engine undertray, and access wasn't any easier.

My mate owns a garage, so I could use his ramp.

There's a lot to remove from the top, and given this is purely preventative, I'm considering the "remove a pipe and spray cleaner" method. However, knowing how tough this stuff is to clean, I'm not overly optimistic.

Can anyone recommend a product for this? Where does all the crap go, into the CAT?

I've done a bit more research on this and it appears the EGR cooler is more/as susceptible to clogging, but it cannot be cleaned as reliably as the EGR valve.

Removal also requires draining of the coolant, and there are some plastic pipes susceptible to cracking if not careful.

Decided to call the VAG specialist I've been taking our cars to for about 8 years today, and they said it's a 6 hour job totaling ~£900 with a new EGR valve and cooler assembly.

Definitely not on the same level as the A4. That's fine - things change. Might leave this one to the pros 🤔

You also have to remove the exhaust downpipe which means removing the EGT sensor and this is prone the galling its thread

Just to avoid causing any confusion, the photo I uploaded in post #3 is not the EGR valve.

The EGR valve and cooler are located on the lower left rear side of the engine. The side of the valve can been seen looking through the gap here:

Foy anyone wanting to attempt this as a DIY, I can confirm it a 6+ hour job, and requires a great deal of patience.

Hi guys, My B9 A5 2.0 TDI has just been at audi and their quoting 1.8k for a new EGR cooler to be fitted which sounds like utter ********* to me since the part is like £400 and also doesnt nessecerally need to be replaced. Can this part be cleaned using these EGR cleaner sprays ? Diesel EGR Cleaner | Wynn's UK Wondering if anyone has any experience using these after getting an emissions light on their dash. Either this or will it need removing and manually cleaning ? I just dont like the idea of spraying chemicals into my intake pipe to clean something much further into the system. Any help is much appriciated !

Yes, I've removed and cleaned the EGR valve on my A4 B8 every 30-40k miles. Considering my A5 is at 60k and I haven't done it yet, I'm curious if others have cleaned their A5 B9 2.0 Ultra EGR valves and if it's a similar process. Same you can observe in New Audi A5
