    Hi guys
my first post isn’t a happy one
i have a a4 2.0tdi bre engine with a timing belt tensioner that is sat in the undertray 😩
If I source a cylinder head (2nd hand) is it just a case of getting it skimmed and doing a straight swop and new timing belt and water pump ?
I have a 40 mile commute early in the mornings with no public transport , so need to get it up and running asap
any advice on this would be greatly appreciated

Two points on skimming/machining firstly to do so means stripping the head of valves and injectors and then rebuilding with new seals and bolts. Secondly, VW state that the cylinder head must not be “reworked” so no skimming or seat/valve cutting, just traditional lapping. The reason for this is the stellite coating from the valves and Seat and the HIP (Hot Isostatic Pressing) anti porosity treatment from the gasket face which means the head gasket will fail in a year or so in my experience, bad experience! If the car is good, you can buy excellent brand new bare casting heads from AMC for around £600 because at £2231.69 a genuine Audi rebuilt exchange head (minus injectors) is too much on a car of this age unless it is something special. AMC also offer the head built with valves and springs for approx £800.
