    Hi All,

Question for all of you more seasoned Passat owners/ mechanics out there:

Owned the car for 5 months. First 3 months no issues at all. Approx 6-8 weeks ago I was accelerating hard up an incline slip road to motorway in 4th. Limp mode kicked in for the first time and after nursing it home and doing a bit of reading it appeared to be over-boost.

Next time I turned the car on it was gone and car behaved completely normal for another 3-4 weeks. Limp mode then came back and since then has got more and more frequent with the gap reducing between each time it occurs. Now I'm at the point where it goes into limp mode as I start to accelerate and pull off my driveway so it's very much a problem now.

In the meantime I have been trying to learn about the issue and do a DIY fix. One of the solutions that I've tried is to spray Mr Muscle oven cleaner into the wastegate of the turbo to break down the carbon build up which causes a lot of issues with the sticking of the vanes/ flaps in the turbo as I've seen on Youtube etc. Also tried disconnecting battery etc.

None of this has worked and so today the car went into a local indy garage who seemed confident in their assessment that the ECU has been damaged by water and is a little corroded. And the mechanic believes this is the cause of the persistent limp mode.

The solution they have pointed me in the direction of is to get it sent to a business specialising in ECU's who will replace the ECU and re-code it. The cost of this is £714 including VAT.

Needless to say this is a high expenditure on a £3500 car that I'd like to avoid if possible. My question is does anybody have any experience of this or a similar problem and what was the solution + cost?

I do also know the turbo itself is fine and works. I was able to get the car into cruise control the other day before it went into limp mode and tested the turbo by increasing the speed quickly via cruise control rather than the accelerator pedal and the car pulled hard and the turbo was definitely working fine. For one reason or another being in cruise control meant limp mode didn't kick in no matter the revs.

Thanks in advance for all advice, replies and insight.

Fist of all we need a full scan of the vehicle using VCDS and including the cars VIN, without at least knowing the fault code(s) the indi retrieved it is guesswork. Mr Muscle is water based and causes the unprotected ferrous components in the turbine housing to rust and seize up, the "proper" kits you can buy to do this are also useless, the only solution is to remove the turbo, strip it down and mechanically remove the carbon fouling. Damage to the ECU from water ingress becoming a common problem on the type 36 platform, when you take them out they look terrible BUT a new ECU fitted and coded the correct dealer way is around £1800. With water damage I have seen specific codes so again, a code read helps enormously.
