    Hello to all

I've had a series of problems on my A6, and the engine now has a very serious performance problem. Over the very recent years and forum posts - I've replaced:

    Inlet Manifold
    Throttle Body
    EGR Valve
    the Turbo itself
Lower Intercooler Hose (in the next day or two)
    N75 solenoid

I've had significant power problems for months and months now. I've been using a great local VAG independent specialist who I really like and trust, but even they've reached the end of what they feel that they can do, and have suggested that I try a local direct injection specialist for specialist diagnosis - hence I'm now pulling my hair out!

    SYMPTOMS:

The car has a serious power underperformance issue. During normal (around town) driving, the car cannot accelerate beyond 3,000RPM and struggles to get to 3k at all - around town, she drives ok'ish at upto 30-40mph type speeds, when acceleration is slow.

In the motorway environment, she is an absolute dog, and can barely outperform an HGV. She will not cruise at more than 65mph on the flat. On any sort of incline, she is completely mullered, and more so if she has been driving more than 20-30 minutes since the engine start. To give any Kent locals an idea, when trying to climb up the sharp, windy side of Detling Hill, she can only just get up it at about 35-40mph, and in 4th gear only. She will not climb this hill in either 5th or 6th. Even in 4th, she was juddering, vibrating, with the gearstick shaking. She felt like she was going to cough and splutter to a halt. On longer, but much shallower, motorway inclines - like the Eastbound stretch of the M25 towards J8 (Reigate) from J9, the car got worse and worse, struggling up the final incline at 40mph in 4th. NB. I have noticed that she does improve a little, after stopping the car, turning off the engine, locking the car, waiting for a few minutes and then restarting. I'd suggest that this small improvement only lasts about 10-20 minutes though.

    BACKGROUND:

My local specialist has most recently replaced several items over the last few months trying to fix the problem. First it was the inlet manifold, as they noticed that the vacuum pump on the swirlflaps wasn't moving. When it came off, it was clear that the manifold was completely coked up and the swirlflaps had seized. A very clean breaker part was fitted. After this was fitted, it felt like it made an noticeable improvement, but this was soon lost, and the car's performance returned to normal (very poor) levels.

The turbo was suspected as the candidate as the source of the problem. A recon unit was sourced and fitted, along with a new return pipe and engine service etc. They thought that the old turbo had too much play in the impeller, and they weren't happening with the audible whistling - they informed me that turbo's should be pretty much silent, and that whistling turbo's indicated that they were coming towards the end of their life. After this was fitted, again, it felt like there was an improvement in performance, but again, this very quickly returned to its present, very poor performance. The new turbo doesn't audibly whistle as the engine revs. There was a noticeable improvement in performance after the turbo was replaced, but again, this soon reverted back to normal.

Last week, they test-fitted a new N75 solenoid. This made a very dramatic improvement in performance, and we agreed to change it and leave it on. At the same time whilst they were investigating the car, they noticed that the lower intercooler hose was extremely weak, and very flexible when you squeezed it with your hand, and was expanding noticeably with every rev of the engine. (A new intercooler hose will arrive imminently). Anyway, the new N75 was fitted, and the performance was *transformed* (positively!) - it was pretty much back to where it should be - I'd estimate it was giving 90%+ of it's expected performance, and we concluded that the weak intercooler hose, once the replacement was fitted, may well cure the last residual hesitation in some of the harder acceleration spots. I drove it away, and she was performing relatively normally. I took her to a known stretch of motorway (both approaches to Whitstable Hill on the Thanet Way - if you're local), and going Eastbound/London-bound, she was comfortable accelerating from 70 - 95mph on the slow drag uphill. Turning around and coming back Westbound, which is shorter and much steeper, the cruise control comfortably held the car at 75mph all the way up (which she wasn't able to do normally - normally, she'd drop to about 45-50mph and splutter her way up). I was confident that we'd largely cured her.

HOWEVER - I used the car on a long drive yesterday (just four days after the N75 was fitted). I noticed immediately joining the motorway for the first time at the start of the journey, there were a few spots of hesitancy, but for the first 50-60 miles, she was driving relatively normally. She was able to keep up with higher speed traffic, and was able to cruise at 80-90mph without too much bother. However, after 60 or so miles and beyond, she simply got progressively worse and worse. In the next 60 or so miles, she rapidly declined from approx. 90% performance to really, really poor levels - indeed, by the end of the entire trip (circa 500 miles), in my opinion, she was worse than she had ever been before. I had to attempted to climb the sharp end of Detling Hill last evening on my way home, and she really struggled to get up the hill at between 35-40mph. Overall, she's absolutely terrible.

Finally - I've noticed that when the problem is occurring, I'm having a *very* large impact on fuel consumption. Normally, she's in the high 40's for mpg. Yesterday, for the first 60 or so miles - she was at about 44mpg. However, by the end of the entire journey, she was down to 29mpg, and that's with an average speed of around 60-65mph. The fuel hit is considerable. I filled up much more than I would have expected to for the mileage covered - the fuel consumption issue is very real.

Does anyone have any idea what the hell is going on with my engine? Does anyone know why after a new N75 is fitted, that mostly resolved the problem, is then effectively over-ruled and stopped from delivering by some other (electronic?) problem that cancelled the performance gain so quickly? My mechanics have never even heard or experienced any of these engine/performance symptoms - let alone dealt with them.

When I think about it, when she's failing to hold speed up an incline in say 6th gear, and she starts vibrating and spluttering forcing me to change down, it does feel like a fuelling problem. I'm guessing, as a layman, that what's happening is that she's actually over fuelling (only a guess), but to me this might logically explain the coughing and spluttering and the failure to hold speed, let alone gather speed. It would also explain the excessive fuel consumption.

She's not leaking fuel into the engine itself. I've checked. The oil level is correct, and it's not pushed up the dipstick by fuel mixing about in the block.

Can anyone help me as to where on earth I go with this next? I know that I'm moving into some specialist territory now, and the list of specialists that really know their onions on this kind of issue is small! I'm happy to fix her, but I really need someone that knows what they're doing, and isn't simply guessing, to diagnose and then fix the problem.

My local independents are suggesting things like injector timing, injector loom failure (both inside the crankcase and time consuming to diagnose, work on and resolve), or possibly even the ECU buggering me about. I'd be so grateful for anyone that has heard of any issues like this - helping me out with a steer or two!

Many thanks in advance for any replies, or suggestions. I'd also really appreciate if anyone knows of a VAG specialist who they think might be able to do the work to sort this out? I've logged the performance within VCDS, but the forum won't let me upload a CSV file as far as I can see!

There MUST be codes stored on the ECU, what are they?

Thanks for replying Crasher - I should have added this into the OP.

There are NO relevant codes at all!! (as far as I can see)

This is the problem. My current mechanics are scratching their heads. I'm scratching my head. I don't know where to go next. They couldn't understand why the turbo wasn't being thrown into limp mode, when the erratic variation of actual -v- expected pressure was way more than 400 milibars difference in some instances. They were telling me that it should dump the engine into limp mode if the variation threshold of 250 milibars is breached. They were performing the "red line the car in 3rd" to test the turbo performance when they were logging their own VCDS readings. Theirs's showed the same variation in pressure readings that mine did.

There are "some" VCDS codes, and I'll paste them in at the bottom of this post - but it's an engine mount sensor, some sort of cluster fault, a glowplug error, an occasionally temperamental bulb, and low battery warnings and a occasionally temperamental oil sensor (which is less than a year old). I have had electronic gremlins in the car previously, which I eventually tracked down as being a faulty control head (replaced) - at the time, the problems being created by the control head were mainly a mahoosive battery drain that killed a battery and refused to let the car shut-down after locking, and also threw up the oil sensor and HVAC sensor codes - here's what it finds and reports:

In your post you mention " and a occasionally temperamental oil sensor " although it doesn't show in your VCDS log.

If it were a low oil pressure warning I could see that putting the engine into limp mode, although I don't know that for a fact.

EDIT Sorry, just noticed it in Instruments -
    00562 - Sensor for Oil Level/Temperature (G266)
010 - Open or Short to Plus

    So probably not relevant.

    Thanks Dean.

I don't want to hear that it might be the Cat! :-(

Is there a way to test for this being the possible cause?
