My Q5 (2010 reg 3.0 Diesel 8RB 176KW) has started showing the coil warning light and limping, but only at first startup of the day and only it seems after a colder night, it didn't do it this morning. When it does do it though I drive a little way, then stop, turn off and turn on again and it clears for the rest of the day. My diag box tells me I have P008800 (Fuel Rail/System Pressure - Too High) and also P106500 ("Fuel Pressure Regulation - Control Difference"). Now is this likely to be just a wonky pressure regulator or could it be something worse?

Remind me tomorrow and post the VIN, I remember seeing a TSB in ELSA about this; any strange noises at idle?

You need to remove the N290 and check the screen for swarf. Do not damage the seals, you cannot buy them and clean the area around the valve before removing it.

The high pressure fuel pump eats itself, usually after a filter change or a misfuelling event.

Oh lordy, this sounds expensive .....

Ok I'm not aware of any fuel mix-ups, and the filter may well need doing but it's not been changed since we've owned the car. However, if I do find iron filings then I'm guessing it's probably time to be looking at a new fuel pump? If so, are we looking at OEM only or are there any pattern parts worth considering?
