Hi all, I had a few issues with my battery and car starting few months back. I got a brand new battery in July and the car worked find and I had no starting problems.
At the same time, I did a parasitic draw test using help on this forum and confirmed that there is not a lot of draw causing battery to drain when off. Battery is a Varta I1 110AH 920CCA.

Now 6 months later, my car is having starting problems again. When I turn the ignition on, I often get the Parking brake, ESP and Glow Plug lights on and they stay on. If this happens my car doesn't start. I still have my old battery I replaced 6 months ago. If I jump start using my old battery the car starts fine. I have charged my car battery and left it on trickle charge for the last 10 days without using it. The battery shows fully charged, but I am unable to start the car. I made sure the charger is working using a volt meter. What could be the problem?

I lost my bluetooth OBD scanner, so unable to read any codes now. Last time I checked after replacing the battery and the control flap in July, there were no codes.

its a faulty relay - i cant mind which but it is responsible for powering up said control modules - the extra juice is just helping it function i would say.
I had those errors and lived with them too long as i read about people changing out control modules and complete can bus systems...
If you do a search for my posts a few years back you should get the part number - its located below the ECU from memory, and is cheaper from Audi then off ebay!.
    good luck.

@swwalker thanks for the info. I believe this is the thread you are referring to. Problems starting...still. - Page 2
I found the relay is about £14 including delivery from *******. https://www.*******.co.uk/bosch/1154825

Can you please let me know if this is the right part? It looks like a number of different Amperage relays are being sold with the same part number.
I will look into how to fit this. Or may be I have to get a local garage to do it for me if it's too hard. Also while I am at it, are there any other relays, fuses I should consider replacing in this fuse box?

Thats the one j317. I dug out my invoice - part number on it is 4H0 951 253 seems to be a standard relay.
7 zap will probably detail the correct amperage
Its easy to swap out - tricky to get to - wipers off and trim from below window off.

@swwalker Thanks for your help identifying the problem. I am struggling to find the part. What is this actually called if I phone Audi. I checked on Auto Doc website, but with this part number, I am getting 4 pin and 5 pin relays ranging from 20A to 70A.
PS. Didn't know what 7 Zap was from your previous comment. Figured out it is a website . Now checking.

I called it can bus relay - my original post goes back to this post

    3.0tdi Allroad brake fault alarm on switch on. "J317 (614) - part number 8E0 951 253"

J317 is the location reference on the schematic audi should know from this - 614 is the identifier / what type it is

Thank you very much. Ordering this now. Glow Plug Control Unit fits OPEL OMEGA B 2.5D 94 to 01 ECU Bosch 1238612 Quality 3165143407677 | eBay
If I understand from the previous thread, I will need to remove the driver side windscreen wiper and the plastic trim under the bonnet which will give me access to the ECU box on the driver side. Hopefully I can give it a try this weekend.

Both wipers and not just the plastic trim under the bonnet also the trim attached to the screen - clean the she wee out while you are there as that seems to be the start of all this trouble somehow - and its on the left hand side of the car. make sure your drains are clear also while in there. if you look here :- Elsa online. ElsaWin. ElsaWeb. Audi on how to remove wiper mechanism /gearbox that will show you how to remove the trim required. you don't need to remove the mechanism but that procedure will give you the instructions you need to get to the ECU box. it wil probably even tell you how to remove the ECU, the ecu does not need unplugged to access the relay from memory.

I got my bluetooth OBD2 scanner today and was able to scan the diagnostic codes. Are these relevant to the cold start problem? I cleared them and they didn't come back after idling for about 5 mins.
