    Dear Forum experts
Can anyone tell me please if the starter motor for a Mk 4 2003 1.6 Automatic, engine code BFQ, is the same as for the manual version ? Same pinion? I am not getting clear replies from parts suppliers.
    Thanks a lot

Another BFQ, until just before Christmas I had never seen one but we did a lot of MOT and recommissioning work on one and this is the second on here in a few days. When you put these cars details into the check system for companies such as ECP, they get totally confused and deny it even exists. Message me the reg or post the VIN.

    Dear Crasher,
Thanks for your helpful reply. This Mk4 has been owned from new by my wife, and was an import (from NL).The only other BFQ I have seen was also an EU import, and also an auto. Maybe the tail-end of Mk4 production, with Mk 5s about to appear, there was a glut of auto BFQ's in Germany they wanted to shift.
Anyway, on the starter motor, I e-mailed Bosch in Germany and got a quick, precise reply. 10 out of 10 for service. There IS a difference in starter motors between Manual and Auto models - the Auto has a 9 tooth pinion, and a Manual has 11. Other dimensions the same.
None of the UK retailers was able to get that right. For future reference, the OEM part number of the auto starter is 020 911 023 F. Common across Audi and Seat models The fault I am sure, is with the solenoid, but with the car on stands in the street, I have limited time to fix, so I am buying a complete starter.
    Best regards

    Dear Crasher,
Thanks for all the detail- useful to have the Bosch reconditioned unit number. That's quite a database you have got there. Until about five years ago, Bosch used to have their detailed car parts catalogues online, but they have all disappeared now. So plugged-in people like you are important today.
    Best regards

Glad it's not just me who has this sort of fun with parts! We are the second owner of our 53 plate BFQ auto, and I recall it was a personal import originally too.
