My other half’s quattro avant is getting a little long in the tooth with 214k miles but goes well. An annoying characteristic is that at slow speeds when dribbling along it seems to stutter as if not sure whether to pull or not. I first thought it might be a throttle issue but since it pulls like a train whenever asked, I am wondering if this might be caused by some transmission slackness perhaps in a UJ in a drive shaft or something similar.
Has anyone experienced this sort of problem and can suggest what may be at fault?

At that mileage there certainly could be some lash in various components so up in the air for a check BUT on a two post the and doe of the joints due to suspension drop can hide problems; I have even known the problem to go away after being in the air as the extra articulation has moved grease into dry areas.

I had the chance to have it looked at on a lift by an MOT tester locally who also drove it. No transmission slack found at all. So what’s next? Something to do with the throttle at low revs? Any suggestions where to start? Might there be something which has become gummed up and needs a clean?

You could start with a code read to see if there is anything amiss, for example an electro hydraulic engine mount failure which is common.

Thanks. I’ll check but don’t think any engine mount faults showed on a fairly recent vcds. scan.
