Ok chaps here we go again with a new problem! 1.9pd 161k.
Start the engine hot or cold and there is an occasional single clunk at first fire. Runs absolutely fine. There is a fine vibration in the car generally, becoming more noticeable under load with the resonance changing with engine speed. Vibration can be felt in the brake pedal, but notably not the clutch - that is quite smooth. While under way if you catch a good bump in the road there is a clunk again similar to the one you get on start up, something is definitely loose.
On the face of it I'm thinking engine mounts. I've got underneath and can see the 'dog-bone' rubber and it looks torn and tired but for the life of me I can't find the other mounts, of which I think there should be another three somewhere.
Am I heading in the right direction? Is this a job that can be done at home?
    Thoughts please.

While I'm waiting to get her looked at, another symptom I've noticed is a pull to the right under acceleration with a definite nod to the left when you lift off. Still engine mounts - or something else?

Finally got her up on a ramp... It would appear that the right side mount has collapsed allowing the dogbone to rub against the slot in the subframe. I'll replace the large rubber in the subframe as well, any special tools needed for that?

The upper and lower tor=que arm bushes in the subframe centre section are a pain to do, you have to remove the section (ALL bolts are one time only). Getting the old inserts out is no problem but getting them in is, to me, impossible without a press and even then you have to put a huge worm drive clips around the outer shell to stop it splitting. The symptoms you describe could also be a failed wishbone front bush or two. I has a Golf 5 GTI (same platform) in the other week and the front bushes were shot, as it was DSG I had to drop the centre section and consul, when taking out one of the rear mount consull inner M10 bolts, it snapped and I had to have a specialist engineer drill it out as the snapped section stuck in the consul was about 60mm deep. You should see the pile of new bolts it takes to do this.

Thanks Crasher, it has that look of pure evil to it. I do have access to a 20 ton press but I'm not minded to use it unless all else fails. I'll do the known bad upper mount first and see how that improves things.

    That does not look fun!
Got her back today. Apart from the obvious collapse in the rubber, the right mount had one of the frame bolts sheared off completely, the other only finger tight. All replaced now and drives like a dream.
I guess the damage could have been done before christmas when I met a sharp hollow in the road at speed. Best described as the reverse of a hump bridge at 60, and landed hard enough to take a chunk out of the engine undertray. Lucky to have got away that lightly I suppose.
Thanks for the guidance on this one.
