Always starts first time when leaving home for first time that day. After travelling for around 10 miles or more then stopping for shopping etc for more than 1 hour car will not start, no sounds from the engine compartment just get the message "push the clutch pedal all the way", even when I am pushing the clutch pedal!. I switch off and pause then try again and same thing happens. Sometime the engine eventually starts but not always, I had to call the local garage last time, they sent an engineer, he couldn't start it either. He then offered to jump start the car and was just preparing to do so when I thought I would have another go at starting and the engine started!! I spoke to my local Audi garage and they could only offer a diagnosis at around £90 if I took the car to them, as they are 35 miles away and there is no guarantee that they can fix the problem I decided to try the Forum first. Any ideas or suggestions please.
Sorry forgot to say it's a diesel engine 1.9ltr.

It's obviously looking for the signal from the clutch switch & not getting it.

Could just be the clutch switch which I think is a Hall type switch screwed under the clutch master cylinder, usually not the easiest thing to get at to replace.

For the diagnostics to find anything they will almost certainly need to test it while faulty.

A type 4F A6 would have to be a 2 litre. I would says it is the clutch pedal switch or position sensor, there are two different systems, message me the reg or post the VIN.

If there was a fault at the clutch position sensor the car would not start at all. Crankshaft sensors can & do go open circuit when warn & start up again cold. Like wise starters can play up when warm to Can you post up your reg no or engine code

There are two designs of clutch pedal position sensors on the 4F, a mechanical switch just like the brake pedal switches that give intermittent problems and a Hall sensor type which can fail due to heat and then come back to life.
