Hi - I have a genuine VagCom and am no expert and my Golf Mk 6 2.0L tdi started having electrical faults almost 1 year ago but then it disappeared until September last year.
Sometimes I get the flashing coil and limp mode, sometimes solid illumiated coil and no Limp mode, more recently the Engine warning light and no limp mode.

Up to now I have been thinking its a short somewhere causing random faults and the common fault is the Engine fault Ref Voltage B.

I have looked in the engine bay for damaged wiring and under the air filter but found nothing. It has been happening more recently in December. Each time I reset the DTC's and the fault is gone.

I'm thinking of taking it to an auto electrician hence have not reset the DTC's in case it helps them but here is my post and last hope of help.

    Thanks for any advice.

If you have VCDS, do a full scan and post the results. As you say don't clear the codes, leave than to the person repairing it.

I have seen a number of these now with the EDC17 engine ECU and it is an internal failure, in a couple of cases we tried to get this repaired and even Bosch Germany was unable to repair it. Making a used ECU work is not easy and a new one is £1758.79 plus installation and coding.

Still no fault if radio is left off...so far.....looks like I have to use the car without a radio from now on.
So not worth trying an auto electrician just to be told ECU is faulty?

I did think about trying a dealer but I'm guessing an auto electrician will try harder to find the fault and a dealer just likes to replace bits at my cost......only based on past experience many years ago with a golf with poor starting....dealer replaced plugs, leads etc with no joy...then a friend mentioned a friend who had a garage that he took his car to for servicing.....they found ignition timing was out and asked me had anyone been working on the car as it was unusual....anyhow they sorted it. Not to say all dealers are the same.

I know of an independant who has the official VAG software (I'm assuming not VagCom) ....would this be a better bet to identify the fault? Would it show up if no current fault on the display as that is the situation at the moment.

    Thanks for any advice.

The dealer system ODIS has a function called Guided Fault Finding which may be of a little more help, this faults link to the radio is odd.

    Thanks for the advice.
I was thinking the issue was the 4124 - Sensor Reference Voltage B P0651 00 [032] - Open Circuit was the culprit thinking its a wiring fault somewhere causing spurious random faults maybe due to Multifunction steering wheel control module as mostly reported as 147462 Terminal 15 B1148 12 [008] Short to Plus whatever that means but twice VagCom found no such fault with Multifunction steering wheel control module though still reported 4124 - Sensor Reference Voltage B P0651 00 [032] - Open Circuit and nothing else.

More lately 4124 - Sensor Reference Voltage B P0651 00 [168] - Open Circuit and Multifunction steering wheel control module 365080 - Controls in Steering Wheel U108E 00 [008] - No Communications so I'm guessing either fault with Multifunction steering wheel control module 365080 or wire fault between steering wheel controls and Radio or a radio fault? Though Radio always passed VagCom testing.

So back to Multifunction steering wheel control module 365080 or wiring fault between steering wheel controls and and radio.......though I must admit I rarely use steering wheel controls at all or for radio......but thinking when radio is on it somehow uses cables to steering wheel controls and maybe its a fault with those wires......can it be the clock spring slip rings?

But I'm no expert and only trying to understand and decide where to take it to be checked.

I'll ask the indy if they have the ODIS system.

One last thing.....without radio on I've pressed every steering wheel button and no fault occurs (engine running) and apart from this "recent" electrical fault the car runs like new and still does as long as limp mode does not happen.

So plan to run without radio for a week or so....then turn radio on again and see how long before any electrical fault happens.

Oh - and a new battery fitted in winter (January) 2019 as a precaution for winter starting.

Thanks again and any further advice much appreciated.

The reference voltage is the 5v supply to a number of sensors such as the one for boost pressure.

Thanks for the advice. Still not using radio and still no fault. Plan to run like this for a few weeks then use radio and see if fault comes back.....if so plan to get indy to look at it.

If I ever find out what causes the fault I'll come back and report it here.
